Dana 44, 3.73, Locking

I will have to research this. I know I don’t in my immediate area, but Austin and San Antonio are not too far away. I’d love to find an HP30 housing! You can just switch the housing? It’s that easy?

The XJ HP30 is a direct swap. Same exact axle. Only it’s a high pinion instead of a low pinion.

You get some extra clearance. About How much over a LP? Don’t you also get like 30% more strength? What year XJ’s am I looking for? Or is it just all XJ’s with the Dana 30? And is the housing all I need to pull?

I believe 93-00. But I wanted one from a “newer” XJ. So 97-00. In 01 they started putting LP30 in XJs. So avoid 2001.
But yeah everything from your LP30 will work in a HP30 aside from gears. The HP30 requires reverse cut gears.
But yeah from my understanding it’s about 30% stronger due to the pinion placement on the ring gear. I have a set a chromoly shafts to into my HP30. Which are 50% stronger than stock shafts. Over all seems like a good set up.

My Traclok was working just fine at 125K, until I re-geared, in which case I freshened up the clutches for $70.

So should I have everything ready to go when I regear, right, since I’ll need special reverse cut gears?

They aren’t “special” exactly.
Everyone sells reverse cut. But yes, if you plan on regearing, that’s when I would do it. Buy a HP30 now. And starting building it up. Locker, gears, shafts. If you wanna get real crazy. A truss.
All of that will be easier to do while the axle is out of the Jeep.

By the time you have 5000 into front and rear axles...you could sell the current jeep, and buy a Rubicon with Dana 44's, Lockers, and a 4:1 Transfer case..Plus be money ahead. What have you really done that you can't very easily duplicate? I bet you already can sell it for more than you paid...

I know. @bobthetj03 and I discussed this a week or so back. Maybe it’s because it’s all just part of the adventure...I can do a Rubicon later, eh?

You got me thinking there’s one thing I can do. That is, put it up for sale for a lot of money and see what happens. If I don’t get it or close, oh well, hold on to it. Otherwise, let it go and have lots of cash to spend and new projects.
