Only reason I did was because I had a tilted pinion and aftermarket covers that I knew raised the fill plug. With reading conflicting accounts of it either going through the vent line or blowing out the seals, I figured I'd play it safe and measure. Granted I say all this and still put in conventional despite it wanting synthetic even after all my research, whoops.
