Does anyone run trail doors / half doors on the trail?

When we sold our CJ5, we told our son that we were getting a more modern Jeep, AC, real heater, stereo you could hear, etc. Never mentioned the doors. The night I showed up with it, he jumped on the trailer and sat in it, he took the keys and turned the ignition and was looking around the doors. My wife asked what was wrong, he said where is the window button. I about fell down. I realized he had never seen crank windows, it was either unzip or electric.

Just 35s. :)

Its an AEV. Bought it that way. I knew it was somewhat unique but didn't know exactly what it was until it was pointed out to me by @Chris soon after I joined the forum. That was my first taste of all that I did not know.
Have mention before but yours is one of my favorites on here. ;)
Well thanks!! But yes that hood is rare indeed. Love the look of your rig!

3-4 years ago when I bought my first TJ my daughter who was in high school at the time and is very very smart academically pointed to the window crank and asked what that was for.

Thread Revival. At least I did a search before asking questions.

Mocking up GenRight aluminum half doors and wondering about the dome light. Would likely build my own switch and put it where it's accessible from the driver's side. But, I'm considering JB Welding a piece of aluminum angle or such on the inner door to compress the switch and allow it to act normally. Haven't even looked into it yet.. just tossing it out there.

The new upper soft windows were a bear to get onto the old frame. It’s probably 95f outside so the temp was not the issue for sure. They do look good and I think this is going to be the tough trail option. Here are some pics:

I used 10-32 SSBH screws 3/8” long. Large fender washers on the inside

I like the layout of the bag. It will be easy to configure. Here are some ideas.

I got the PCP bags to go with the GR half doors. Yup, they come with push pins and the door's upper frame is pre-drilled on the bottom for the PP. But there's no hole in the upper bag for the pins. I'm thinking I'll hit the hobby store for a grommet install kit and install my own grommets in the doors, to prevent wear and tear on the mounting points.. and avoid additional holes in the half-doors. Depending on fitment I'll do the bottom as well or add some industrial grade velcro to the back.
I can run armrests OR upper doors, not both together on the GR doors No big deal. Bestop uppers are 6 - 8 weeks out.

FWIW I installed OEM hinges and OEM mirrors. Got both on E-bay in the correct black. So I only need to swap complete doors and not mess with mirrors.

Ordered a grommet tool and will do the PCP bags with that. GR doors are pre-drilled for the bags.

Also, taking a couple winch lead safety straps I have laying around with loop on one end and install a grommet on the other end to install under the existing OEM hinge bolts on the GR doors for limit straps. One will say Warn, the other Ramsey.

Found this via YouTube to resolve the dome light situation.. way too cool IMO.

I think we need to consider 1/2 doors, and only run the front half. You could park closer to stuff too.

You disable the lights via the fuse and if you need light you use the dimmer switch. It is not that difficult……
Are you saying the dimmer switch will still turn on the lights with #4 fuse removed?

Or... permanently change it so the fuse is not in the equation. A one shot deal with or without doors on.

I like my Craigslist bestop $50 1/2 doors. They have a pocket for chew, a pocket knife, maps, and my sons squirt guns

Plus with 1/2 doors I’m not tempted to stick my foot out and look like a dumbass

And they look cooler than tube doors that have no function and look ridiculous

I’ve been drinking Rye tonight so if I’ve offended anyone I still won’t care in the morning

Yes the factory switch still turns on the dome light with the fuse removed. The fuse just disables the door button/switches.

I really cant believe how often this confusion comes up. All of those extra switches and springs are just because the function of removing the fuse is confusing. I have two good friends who bought and installed a switch not knowing you can remove the fuse and manually turn the dome light on whenever you want.

I use the fuse switch, and for me it is a lot easier and much quicker than pulling the fuse. I never run without doors, and I still use the thing quite frequently when I don’t want the lights - usually off road, but also frequently when I’m working on the rig. I’ve had the thing in there for 15 years and have never had a problem.

I'm a fan of the switch. My glovebox is usually locked and full of stuff so the switch is easier for me.

Heard that, Ryan - and I also have this thing between me and the fuse…

The Mercedes switches are on their way so I'll be going that route. Gives me on/off at the stem and one at each door jamb, works as original with the full doors on, no fuse to R/R, and no 'extra' switches.

Thought I'd get a better reception for this mod.. lol.

And where the hell are the emojis?
