Exhaust Components - Welded or Clamped?

Can you say more about (or point me toward) these factory style conical semi-ball connections? Is that what I'm familiar with where the down-pipe meets the exhaust manifold? I don't remember seeing any other kind of connection (other than a weld) for the rest of the length of my OEM exhaust.

The manifold is a straight flare connection that also works well. The ball connection is like this one, (not the correct size) and you want the style with the formed bolt flange. The flat flanges bend too easily.

The factory later muffler to tail pipe behind the cat is similar but less ball shaped. Sort of a blend between the ball and straight taper at the manifold.
