2001 TJ 4.0L I6 - just put on a Metalcloak 3.5" lift. When putting on the rear passenger shock, it is tight against the exhaust pipe. I drove it 25 miles and the black sheath around the shock melted. How can I force the exhaust pipe toward the center of the jeep to get it off the shock.

Then how do I repair the melted section?

The black sheathe is just a cover, it's an unimportant part of the shock. It can be removed without affecting the shock.

Take the Jeep to a small independent muffler shop and just have them reroute the pipe. It's common to have to do that with some suspension lifts.

X2 to what Jerry said. That's the only way around this. They'd probably charge you no more than $100, I can all but guarantee that. It will take them 30 minutes.

I was charged $40. They cut and reweld it in a couple spots between the tailpipe and muffler.

Regardless, I would remove the black plastic covers (I did). They will eventually rub the paint off of the shock exposing bare metal.
