Contemplating fabbing up a rear bumper. I haven't really seen one that I like all that much, that does what I think I need.
Here's the deal, I have access to a lathe, a Bridgeport, welding equipment, shears and press brakes. There are no rear bumpers out there that put the spare tire off center to the passenger side, and a gas can off center next to it on the drivers side. It would be nice to hang the farm jack, a shovel and an axe behind the spare tire. That's a lot of junk on a swing out tire carrier, and a fair amount of weight.
What came to mind was removing the existing stock rear bumper and making a shorty hinge stub on the passenger side, tie it into the frame and rear cross member. Make a shorty bumper stub for the drivers side that would support the 'hanging' end and give the pivoting piece some place to rest on and lock into. Fab up an A-frame type upright to hold the tire and provide a place to hang the junk. It would be crowded back there, but it would all be out from inside at least.
What ya' all think? Got any ideas for refinements or additions?
Oh, biggest tire size would be 32 - 33" Gas can is standard NATO from Wavian. The swing out would take the place of a rear bumper.
