Hi

New to Jeep ownership. Just picked up a 2003 Sport. Very solid frame, just surface rust. Question is what is next? What should I do to help keep the frame rust free? I have seen some advice that includes knocking off the loose rust and using POR15. Is this a good idea? Better options? What about the inside of the frame (still smooth and rust free)?

Looking forward to having a lot of fun with this Jeep and appreciate any advice.

Thanks
Gator

It’s difficult to say without photos of the frame’s current condition but Fluid Film and Surface Shield have kept my ‘05 daily driver LJ rust free through 11 Minnesota winters.

There’s a fairly detailed thread here: https://wranglertjforum.com/threads/rust-proofing-from-road-salt.68053/

It’s also a good idea to install frame plugs so that the tires don’t throw road spray and debris inside the frame.

This is key right here. Keep it clean, painted and use rust inhibitors inside. If you want to get fancy Eastwood makes a lot of products for treating frames as well.

My frame was clean so I did Eastwoods Internal frame coating 12 years ago (before Fluidfilm was popular).
Still looks good today, but I don't drive it in the salt.
