Front driveshaft u-joint removal

Mine had the injected plastic on the front drive shaft, but not the axle shafts. Was that a thing that was done?

I used MAPP gas and a ball joint press the rebuild the drive shaft. The first u joint was daunting and pretty noisy when it popped.

I have that too on my LJ, I thought it was just me. I got the injected plastic completely out, but I am at a loss as to how to get a new joint in there...the injection channel is set too far in to allow for exterior clips and I don't see any ledge on the inside of the ears to put an inside clip in...if you could solve this mystery I would be thrilled.

IIRC, the new (spicer) replacement should have an internal clip on the joint.

So the clip just sits on the inside of the joint, but isn't really "seated" anywhere?

The new ujoint caps have a groove in them. The c clips fit into the grooves in the caps And keep them in the ears.

I have mine listed as 5-760x for all Ujoints on the front drive shaft. '06 Rubicon TJ. That's what I got from the "sticky" page. All other joints are same as you listed.

Always ask for ALL of the old parts back from any job you don't do yourself. Tell them you want them for "back up spare parts". And anytime they pad the bill "oh yea, had to build a special tool..." ask to see this "special tool" so you know what you'll need next time.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I found an old page that listed out all the u-joints, and as the chart from @jjvw shows, the 5-793x is the proper u-joint for the location in question. I got a spicer on the way from advance auto, using their 20% off and free shipping over $25, I got one here by the end of the week for $27 total.
