Then I'd make sure to opt for the roller fairlead and go with the above recommended plate holder. And don't let anyone tell you that an aluminum hawse is required if you go with synthetic rope, that old-wive's tale was disproven years ago. Some websites perpetuate that myth but they're just presenting outdated information. A roller fairlead is actually gentler on a synthetic rope and nope, the rope won't/can't move into the corners between the rollers to be damaged.

If you mean off to the side of the fairlead or hawse, yet it can. The rollers are far easier on the rope than a hawse is though. Which is why I converted back from the hawse I converted to when installing my first synthetic rope to my original roller fairlead.

How does it come off? Does it just fall off? Are the Smittybilt clamps spring steel or are they the Maglite clips like shown above? There's no way the plate could fall off with the Maglite clips, they hold it extremely securely, I almost have to brace myself a tad to pull them off.

That is the same one I have and they appear to be spring steel and yes it takes a good solid tug to remove them, you would have to hang up on something to get one off I believe. Also the brackets/clips are adjustable for different widths between the rollers.

Roller fairleads that have been used with wire could have small nicks in them, which could end up ruining your new expensive rope. If you're going to use a used one, make sure to give it a good look over.

Yep good idea, just use a grinder or file to remove any nicks left over from the use of wire rope. Mine only took a few minutes to polish up.

We're required to have them in colorado but...I'm super lazy and mine is behind my tractor jack. Yay for never getting caught at traffic cams.
I've never gotten pulled over for it, but I've also only been pulled over once by a cop who is a friend and just wanted to mess with me after seeing me tow someone out of a snow bank.

Ah and that was another of my favorite gotcha items. Plate not visible. I especially loved those that put that plastic cover over the rear plate to defeat the laser speed detectors--they don't by the way-

Yes, spring steel. I've lost mine going through very deep weeds/brush. I need to get some stronger clips. Where did you get your Maglite clips Jerry?

I just drilled a couple of holes in my bumper and fished in two through-bolts.

That's the design I was going to show him if he was going to install a winch. But I made mine for $5 for the Maglight clips plus a little scrap of sheet metal for the license plate backing. 30 minutes of work plus $5 for the Maglight clips beats that $35 it'd cost when you add in shipping & tax. Not to mention you wouldn't have to suffer the indignity of installing a Smittybilt brand.

I went with the Tuffstuff brand. It was expensive for what it was. I bought just the plate holder that flips up. I thought the flashlight clip idea was good. But, I feared some jerk would steal the plate just for the fun of it. Making me have to deal with the aftermath. At least with the flip up design, it's easy to move out of the way for the winch, and it makes them work at least a little bit to swipe the plate.
