Fuse #19 (Fuse Block) Cigar Lighter / Accessory Issues

I'm looking into wiring an accessory or two into the cab of the jeep. For simplicity I'm planning on tapping into the fuse box behind the glove box. I forgot the # but it was the cigarette lighter (switched). I also have an empty slot that is Aux unswitched.

In testing with my volt meter I would think the switched port would not have any power without the key turned on? It receives power with or without the key turned on....Is this right? The unswitched port has power with or without key which makes sense to me. I also tried the radio fuse which has power with or without the key turned on also. Is this all normal??

Are you checking voltage across the fuse or fuse + to ground? It could be switching the ground

Unswitched means power with ignition switch ON or OFF.
Switched means power ONLY with ignition ON.

When testing the ports I used the ground underneath the speaker and then red (positive) to the fuse. And it always registers power, with or without the key.

Are you checking voltage across the fuse or fuse + to ground? It could be switching the ground

I checked it by attaching the black probe to the ground underneath the speaker and then using the red probe to test for power at the fuse.

Right, thats what doesn't make sense. Im tapping into fuse #19 which says AUX POWER (Switched) Cigar LTR. So it should only have power with the key in the on position. Yet, it has power all the time??

IF you download the PDF for the Factory Service Manual for your '98 TJ you will see on page 8W-41-2 that Fuse 19 is fed thru a Cig Ltr/Acc Relay that is powered from Fuse 5 of the PDC. This relay may be sticking OR someone modified the wiring to keep the relay engaged.

Thanks, I’ll check it out. There is some funky wiring going on in this Jeep so it’s possible that somebody messed with something. And I’m not very good with electrical work so I’m learning as I go. Thanks again.

Im actually working on my daughters 2000, but you got me going in the right direction. I need some addtl help if you would please. See attached. If I'm reading this right it goes Battery > PDC (fuse 15) > Cig/Acc Relay. So where is the actual relay located? Under the dash? I didn't see it in the PDC with the other relays, unless I missed it.

I used the unswitched circuit for my cb radio. I would recommend checking these two wires which are the battery positive for each circuit. One is unswitched and one is switched. The labels are still there if you are lucky but if not the colors and labels are in the picture below. If you have power on your unswitched with the key off then you have something going on.

Thank you. I’ll take a look and see if I can find those wires. I don’t remember seeing them tho. But that could be the issue with some of my other electrical issues, maybe they’re attached to the unstitched power.

At the moment I’m tapping directly into fuse 19 with a fuse tap. It should be switched but it seems to have power all the time. I’m thinking maybe the relay is stuck?? But I don’t know where it is.

It's under the hood in the relay/fuse box.

I don't see anything for Cigar Lighter/Accessory Relay in this diagram.

I'd have to go check out mine. The 1997 is different. A 98 likely is too. My fuse at least is under the hood.

There may be a relay for switch power under the dash near the steering column. Near the flasher relay.

Remove the plastic clam shells surrounding your steering column and inspect the Ignition Switch and electrical harness for signs of overheating. Pay special attention to terminal 8 (Black/Dark Green) wire which energizes the relay.

The wires are part of the harness that goes behind the fuse box on the right if your looking at it.

Prior owner installed a car alarm so I’m guessing there is going to be all kinds of connections spliced in. I have no idea how a car alarm should be wired but I’m guessing I’m going to have learn pretty quick.

I wouldn’t mind just removing the whole alarm either.

Do you know if those wires are year specific? I’ve been back there in my ‘04 many, many times and I’ve never seen them.

As far as I know the wiring is broken up as follows. 97, 98-99, 2000-2006. There are small differences but nothing major. I would highly recommend consulting the manual specific to your year in the TJ Resources section.
