Gas tank conversion?

So after double confirming, unfortunately my TJ 2.5L comes with the 15 gallon tank. The other day I was off roading and realized I wouldn't be able to be comfortable for a while driving considering the gas station was a long drive from the beginning of the trail. What I had in mind was doing a 19 gallon tank conversion upgrade. I found a couple OEM gas tanks on Ebay but was curious if anyone has tried this or whether its possible?

I believe all the TJ tanks are 19 gallons but some are restricted to only hold 15. Somewhere there is a modified to correct that.

Drop your tank. Pull out the fuel pump. Cut the vent tube back to about 3/4 of an inch. Now you have a 19 gal tank. There is a how to on this.

Yep I said the same thing, I also did this modification since my TJ was a SE model it of course came with the 15 gallon tank. I did that mod about 6 months after I bought it.

Wait so on to my next question, if I'm going to be doing this conversion; should I replac my leaking fuel pump for a 15 gallon and upgrade the pump for a 19 gallon one?

On the fuel pump assembly is the fuel level float for your fuel indicator. To get your gauge needle to read properly you could switch to a 19 gallon part number but I believe that is the only difference.

Me personally. I did not need to replace pump so when full, my fuel gauge stays full for near 80 miles before it begins to move. My low fuel light comes on and I have a 65 mile range until I am running on fumes.

Very helpful, I’ve seen that to be the case with many of those that don’t switch it out. The only reason I need to switch mine out is because it’s leaking so it’s up for service regardless. Luckily the 19 gallon one is cheaper! I’m assuming the fuel filter should also be changed to 19 gallons? Mine is super worn out
