You’re close, just a matter of getting it dead nuts now.
I found that thinning out the yellow paste with a bit of gear lube helped make the pattern more readable. It also seemed to easily transfer the paint to more gear teeth and I found that helpful.

Ok that makes sense now. It's risky to put the original shim under the pinion head as it can be too thick. You would need a bearing puller that could remove the bearing without damaging it if you needed less shim thickness. You got lucky! Most just remove the slinger behind the pinion head and add all the shims behind the race. Did you by chance measure how thick that shim was?

It's you axle so you can decide if you want to run it or not. A lot of people would describe that as a runnable pattern. Your options are limited now since you have the shim under the pinion head. I think another 1 or 2 thou would be interesting to see but the smallest shims are 3 thou. You might try throwing a 3 thou in just to see but I think you are probably there now.
