I know this has been discussed but I’m finding a lot of conflicting info. I’m about to regear my 2004 Jeep Wrangler X 4.0 with 4 speed auto transmission. It has 3.73 gears stock. What gear ratio would be best for a 33” tire, mainly on road use with occasional light off road use? I have no intention on going to 35’s. Thanks for any input.

Due to your 42RLE 4-speed automatic with its extremely (!!!) steep Overdrive ratio that drops the rpms by 31%, I'd go for nothing less than 4.88 but my recommendation is 5.13.

Yes the idiots in the local 4x4 shop will scream and cry that you should go for nothing more than 4.10 or 4.56 because they simply don't know anything about your 42RLE transmission and how far it drops the rpms on the highway.

@Abrao865d just had a thread about this. He wanted better gearing for the same situation. Turns out he already had 4.88s from PO and he didn't feel 4.88 was deep enough.
