Hardwired 5V USB port?

I want to get a USB port on top of my dashboard. I know about the ones that are made to go where the 12v sockets are, that’s not what I want.

Any ideas?

There are multiple dash mounted options and others that are just a loose cable. I have one of each on mine.

The only useful advice I would offer is to spend money on quality. When I installed the first loose cable on mine, the plug end would get hot and it eventually cooked itself into not working.

I plan on replacing the cigarette lighter with a USB port and a trans temp gauge where you put your power port.

I’m trying to avoid cables running in front of the radio and hvac controls

Given those restrictions, I am not aware of a way to get a USB port up there without partially covering a vent.

Can't get much less bulky than that from what I've seen. Maybe there is room up on top with the larger tray some of us have. The plug would face up.

You'll have to install a USB port to power your USB port.

I have a similar mess going in the glove box.

Hmmmmm....... that might work. Those cylindrical ports are about 1.5” deep

If you don't have signal on the data wires some devices wont charge. Especially newer phones require +5, ground and voltage on the data wires before they will start charge, I think Apple uses the data wires to set the charge current of the device. Just something to consider if you are putting together your own USB power supply.

I've read the same thing, but I'm unclear on how prevalent the issue is. So far, I haven't plugged in a device in the Jeep that hasn't been able to take a charge on any of my USB ports. The oldest plug is one the center dash from 5 years ago.

All pre-built USB chargers have voltage on the data pins. It is only an issue if you make your own and leave the data pins open. When you say you don't have problems with yours, did you make yours or buy one?

Bought not built. Just wired to the battery.

My concern is getting one that pushes enough power to charge the new phones quick. As it is now I have a power port one that charges my phone pretty quick and if it dies I just plug a new one in, if I used a hard wired one it would be more of a pain in the butt to replace or upgrade.

I bought a set of cheapie amazon 12 v to 2 usb. Worked fine until I grounded a positive wire on the leg it was on
