I have a squeak in the front end that has been progressively getting worse. Normally I don't drive the Jeep a ton, but my DD has been down for a timing belt change I can't seem to finish so the Jeep has been playing DD lately, and the noise has definitely worsened with the extra driving. I haven't done anything to it yet because I need to get my DD back together before I tear it down at all. Here's where I've been able to get so far.
Jeep is 2002 TJ, 4.0, 5 speed. Dana 30/35, lousy 3.07 gears, louiser 3 inch body lift, 32.5" or so tires. 83,000 miles, gets a lot of off road time these days.
-Sounds like a metallic vibration to me- like metal rubbing on metal
-Noise sounds like it is in front of me when I'm driving.
-Noise is relative to speed- usually doesn't start until above 20mph or so, frequency seems to increase with speed.
-Noise is not relative to rpm- take it out of gear and rev the motor, no change.
-No change in gear throttle on, in gear coasting, out of gear coasting.
-Less noise in 4 Hi than in 2wd. Doesn't go away entirely, but seems to be less. When first shifted into 4 Hi there's a second or two break in the noise before it resumes.
I think that's all I've come up with so far. I've looked underneath, nothing obvious out of place. Front pinion seal leaks, but the front diff is full and fluid is clean, (recent change). Rear diff on the other hand... let's just say the Dana 35 isn't gonna stick around much longer based on how silver that oil was before I changed it recently. But I dont think the noise is out of the rear end.
Best I can figure it's front drive shaft or front diff, but if anyone has anything more specific or any other thoughts I'd love to hear them. Don't just want to start throwing parts at it. I could stand to do front u joints anyway, they've never been done so it's time.
