High mileage XJ

How many miles are too many on a TJ/XJ 4.0 (215k)? The body is absolutely PRISTINE!! Is it too much of a stretch to assume that if the body was so well taken care of, the mechanicals were too?

Edit: this wouldn't be for wheeling, just my wife's daily driver.

I think at 215K that is still not a ton of miles for an XJ, with the consideration that regardless of maintenance you will still have age related failures and issues. There are many people on you tube that have XJ's that are double that miles and still running strong(WAEMID IV and KyleSVT among others). Thankfully the 4.0 was in production for a loooong time, there are plenty of core's, replacement parts and upgrades not to mention community knowledge around them. I say take a look, if you don't hear anything terrible from the engine or transmission its probably a safe buy. You'll still have to fix things but fixes will likely be cheap and the 4.0 is not hard to rebuild. The Transmission in the XJ is also known for being one of the most reliable automatic transmissions in a jeep product. They are well liked and stout.

Price is a bit high, and I would probably want to pay 7k to 7500 for it. Only negative is the lift and the Dana 35 in the rear. Hopefully they did the re-gear properly.

At 215k though it has either already had a transmission rebuild or it's going to need one.

Depends, the AW4 transmission is way stronger than any of the Chrysler transmissions in other Jeeps of that era. The AW4 is basically a Toyota A340, and I've seen them with 300-400k miles on them.

With XJs, the biggest weak point is rust. If the body is clean, mileage wouldn't worry me at all. I would just expect to replace the normal Jeep stuff on a 26 year old Jeep. I owned 3 XJs previous to my TJ, and have worked on close to 20 others that my friends and family owned. They are good rigs, but like anything else with that mileage expect it will need rubber suspension bushings and other parts that are worn due to age.

EDIT: 1999 is also a very sought after year for Cherokees. It is the year before the California emissions with additional cat convertors and the crack-prone 0331 cylinder head found in 2000-2001 models.

If you look at it, I'd inspect the rear drivers side well. The paint on the rear door looks a bit off.

Out of curiosity, is there an XJ forum of comparable knowledge to this TJ forum? (I know there are numerous XJ forums, I'm just wondering about which has the best knowledge base.)
