Hood louver question

Hey guys, I found this knock off tj hood louver on amazon (Link below) , got some good reviews wanted to know if y’all had any experience with it, I wasn’t a huge fan of the big Spyder on Poison Spyder’s. Also does anyone have any problem with water getting In, evidently you’re engine is going to get wet when you drive in the rain, I didint think it would matter since the electrics are pretty sealed up, but I wanted to know if there are any horror stories. Oh and lastly, do the darn things work, I live down in Texas so it gets pretty hot under there, I haven’t seen coolant temps to high yet, but I’ve only had the Jeep since April, and if you stand infront you get huge washes of scalding air, god help you if you open the hood. I mean they look cool, don’t get me wrong but iv’e heard mixed results of them actually working.

I m trying to get rid of some of the under hood heat, I’ve heard that they help vent the hot air that builds up around the engine, makes some logical sense but I’ve also heard they don’t do anything but look good.

100% agree. I live in the hot part of California with days well over 100 degrees and have yet to see a need for chopping up the hood. In fact I run with the A/C on and never get over 210. I guess I have a healthy cooling systems

Maybe, I’ve found a couple melted wire wraps and a dead coolant sensor, was thinking those might be related but could be something else. Guess I’ll have to look around, might just do it for looks. I’ve got a bit of a dent to, not to bad but would be a fringe benefit.

I think hood louvers work at venting additional heat at low to no speed..but I installed mine mostly for the way they look

got mine from Genright, so I could avoid the spyder

Yeah I’m not to worried about high speed cooling, but I was out adjusting the headlights with the Jeep at idle, I swear Dang near burned the hair of my legs standing there, and forget leaning up on the hood. I spend a good amount of time at low speed so I was toying with the idea, also I think they look good, my main concern is am I going to cause another problem by trying to fix one that’s not that bad/ doing a cosmetic upgrade?

I installed the Genright 2 piece long set 10 years ago. I have had no problem with water but live in the Arizona desert and am rarely in rain. The purpose was to let some of the excessive heat out and help all the plastic & rubber parts under the hood live longer. It looks OK but I do modifications on my Jeep for function not looks.

Have you checked and confirmed that your cooling system is working properly? If you haven't, I very strongly recommend you do that first before looking into this.

Yep. As long as your cooling system is working like it should, there should be no need for anything else.

I think they look cool. And my red paint on my hood is cracking and there’s no way a respray is going to match the rest of the vehicle. Not with red.

How much rain water do they allow to pass through them is what I wonder.

That’s my main concern, I suppose if your just doing it for looks you could simply not cut out that part of the hood but that seems like a waste. I just installed a junkyard set on my LJ and while I didn’t have problem with under-hood heat I installed them mainly because I liked the look of them and I had a set kicking around for the last decade.
What surprised me was the hood flutter completely stopped after installing them.

I don't think so. The factory cooling system can deal with some pretty tough stuff including hood vents. Some people think the vents help prevent some of the plastic from degrading as quickly, who knows, they could be right? I personally wouldn't worry about the water or anything else if I liked the look. I probably wouldn't cut up my hood just for that but I don't think you're going to cause any problems. There are lots of people here that run them without any problems.

I put louvers on mine both to reduce the hood flutter and also to prolong the life of the plastic and rubber pieces in the engine bay.

If you like the look get'em but know they aren't gunna lower coolant temps or anything like that.

Yes the underhood heat will leave your rig faster when you stop or are going slow because it is now vented.

I can't imagine the hood louvers cause water to get on the belt any worse than water being kicked up by your tires driving down the road.
