This post is not meant to insult anyone's ability or intentions, or to make anyone hesitate to regear . I'm just a guy , I own a remodeling company , have worked with my hands all my life , and was a mechanic in my early 20's.
After regearing my '03 Rubicon , with my company mechanic, I had to take the Jeep to a pro to dial it in and get the front locker pin to hook on to the locker flange so the dash light worked . At that point , I was just glad it actually would roll.
Had a pinion seal I noticed last week leak so I took it back to be repaired , and had the recommended Rancho shocks installed also. Nice stuff.
Got it back today , plan on leaving for Gatlinburg Wednesday , and now I have a leak in the front at the diff cover , front is low of fluid, the front has too much backlash , and it has a gear noise on decel from the front ...hope I didn't hurt anything . Really they should have checked the front , knowing the rear seal failed .
I'm thrilled I regeared it ,and sick that I attempted it myself ...now it's turned into a situation where the shop likely feels they are getting stuck fixing someone else's problem , and I truly understand that ...and it 'll be a cold day in Hades before I crack it open again personally.
I own a business , I know the deal.
So what's the point here ?
Well, don't underestimate the difficulty of the job and where it's going to leave you if you run into problems .
Now that I've been into a differential , and have seen all that has to be spot on to be successful , I'll gladly pay a pro, and enjoy some peace of mind .
