So before I found this forum and a couple others that have some really smart people on it, I thought bigger and more $$$ had to mean better. From the get-go, I was like V8, 1-tons, and 40s with a stretch is the best thing for my LJ. Now I'm questioning everything but the V8. My plan was to re-gear and beef up the current 30/44 combo to stand up to a little more abuse on 35s. However, I came across a deal on a HP44/9" combo already built with lockers(both axles still had the tag from the shop that set them up) that cost less than what I was going to spend on the regear and axle upgrades on the 30/44. I bought a complete 2006 Dana 60 out of a SuperDuty for $200 earlier this year with that plan in mind. Now fast forward to the past month or so, I find the Savvy/Currie Everyman's Challenge LJ on 35s, no stretch, good suspension, tummy tucked, and obviously a great team behind the rig running the KOH race. Boy did that get my cogs turning and re-thinking what I thought was good. Now I see all the issues with my current suspension set-up and what I need to do to fix that. This will be my 1st real build so I want to do it right and I want input from the great people on this forum and not build stuff multiple times to get it right.
My Rig right now:
4.0/42RLE/241OR HP44/9" at 66" and 65" WMS, MetalCloak 3.5" springs and control arms, 35" MTRs, Savvy Cable shifter, stock skid for now
My original plan:
5.3 or 6.2/6l80e/atlas, Dana 60/10.5, long arm, coil-overs, 40" tires, 2-3" front stretch, 4-5" rear stretch
My new plan:
5.3 or 6.2/6l80e/atlas, axles?, mid-arm, still coil-overs, tires 37-38", no front stretch, still considering rear stretch to lose the overhang(talk me into or out of it)
I want to be able to take the Jeep anywhere in CONUS and wheel it. Johnson Valley, Moab, Rubicon, mostly rocks with as little mud as possible. Please give me as much input, advice, and resources to read up on. I want to learn why it needs to be this way not just copy and paste. I know there is no one way to skin a cat, I just want to do it the right way.
