Installed some sound deadening

Where are the most strategic areas to install sound deadener?

Firewall, Transmission tunnel and wheel wells but you really might as well do the whole tub while you’re at it

I only have a small amount, I think 18sq ft. I didn’t want it in the footwells due to water. I was thinking firewall, transmission tunnel, and doors, but maybe wheel wells would be better than doors. Thanks!

To play a game common to this forum, what problem are you trying to solve? Do you know what CLD tiles are used for? Ok, enough of that Lol.

If your jeep is noisy, which they are, I really don't know how much more you'll gain beyond what the factory produced. Although HT and full doors are by far the most quiet configuration, its not that quiet. If you wish to embark upon this journey, allow me an opportunity to tell ya about the products involved.

You'll need -

CLD tiles
Closed cell foam
MLV
Hydrophobic melamine foam

Each of the above is a piece of the puzzle. Each by itself will do what its intended, but it takes all of the pieces to complete the puzzle.

Quick rundown of the above products.

CLD tiles or Constrained Layer Damper is used for reducing structural vibrations or panel resonance. Large metal panel transmit noise like a speaker, adding CLD tiles reduces these vibrations.

Here's the thing, to properly work, only 25-30% of the panel needs to be covered. The audio industry perpetuated the myth that the whole car needs to be covered. Examples of ppl blindly following misconceptions of others can also easily be found in the jeep world.

Closed Cell Foam is used to decouple one object from another. An example would be a plastic door panel and a door or MLV from a panel.

MLV or Mass Loaded Vinyl is used to block noise. Its very rigid and can only make simple bends. Its trimmed to mirror a panel and would be used anywhere except overhead.

Hydrophobic Melamine Foam or Acoustic Foam is used to block high pitch frequencies and/or noise that's already inside the cabin such as echoes.

Properly adding CLD tiles to a jeep tub will make a difference, I'm just not sure that difference will be worth pulling the interior. Covering your whole tub in CLD tiles will also make a difference, I'm just not sure that difference will be worth pulling the interior, the money spent or the time involved.

But, to each their own. If someone wants to run a long arm, I'm not gonna stop em! Hehehehehee

I'm sure you're right. I got 18 sq ft of Noico 80mil for Christmas two years ago and still haven't installed it. Some of my original purpose was to decrease heat around the transmission tunnel. I thought I would just put it on the firewall and tunnel, while also hoping to get a little sound deadening. I'm not planning on buying anymore.

It's not much extra work for me since I'm already pulling the seats and OEM carpet anyway to replace the carpet with BedRug and install seat heaters. Like you said, it's very involved to do it all right, and I already have a HT and run full doors, so I'm not interested in going into all the research and expense of CLD tiles, Closed Cell Foam, MLV and Hydrophobic Melamine Foam.

I must say I'm impressed by your knowledge of all the puzzle pieces and how they work, but that's way beyond my interest. Thank you!

If it's a waste of time for me to even put down the 18 sq ft, let me know and I'll just bypass it and someone can have my Christmas present. 🤣

No no no, if you're going to already have the Jeep apart, then there is certainly no harm in using it. I would maximize the use of it on the floor and firewall rather than concentrating it in any one area. Jute padding, if you were so inclined, would be a nice choice for the floor in conjunction with the CLD tiles. Its very easy to work with, but would defeat the purpose of the waterproof bed rug. All of that said, it's a Jeep!

Properly sound deadening a car is a work of passion. I'll do it on the cars that I own, but not generally anything I would build and sell to someone. The cost of the product ($1200-1500) and the 40 to 50 hours of labor that I put into it, would never recovered.

I'm sure CLD tiles would provide some relief from heat if only used on FW and trans tunnel. I can't speak to how much, I've never used it for this purpose

I don't really care about the noise but did it help with heat from the floor??? My feet get hot.
I had the same problem in TX. My feet were always hot in my Jeep, especially in Summer. LIvecd there 45 years, now I live in WA state. Feet don't get hot anymore. 🤣 I think the heat can be cut down. I'd focus first on what you can do on the outside of the tub. There are usually heat shields already there that are awesome. Maybe bulk up on the outside, then focus on the inside. There are several really good threads on doing this. Wish I could direct you to one.
