Hey everyone! I hope this post can give some guidance on what should be an easy install and the issues I ran into with getting my old tailgate hinges off.

I recently purchase a Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD Tire Carrier as I expect to move up in tire size and the carrier needed some additional support. I love the product and this was an easy install... other than the old Torx40 bolts not coming out of my tailgate hinges. I ended up having to drill through 4 of the bolts, so I will share my experience with this.

This install should have taken about an hour, but like many tasks, you run into issues. I will walk you through the process and provide a link to a very helpful video.

First, I went to remove the old hinges Torx40 bolts. I have an impact wrench and was trying to be careful not to strip the bolts. I noticed the 4 bolts in the tub would come out with no issues. However, the 4 bolts in the tailgate would not budge, even with Penetrating Oil. I sprayed the bolts several times over, hoping they would come loose. They did not.

I read that heat sometimes helps loosen the bolts but do not have a torch, so I went straight to the drilling. I used a 5/16 and 1/4 inch drill bit to do the drilling and tried to be careful not to go too far. I got 3 of the 4 bolts heads to come off with no issues but the bottom right bolt on the tailgate hinge would not come out and drilled wonky and is now unusable (I will likely replace my tailgate in the future and the tire carrier is sturdy without this bolt for the time being). Once I got the bolt heads off, I sprayed the threads with the Penetrating Oil several times and used needle nose pliers (vice grips wouldn't squeeze into the small area) and got the threads out to install the new hinges and carrier. I had to adjust the bolts some to get the tailgate to close and the nut bracket in the tub was hard to hold along with the heavy duty hinge from rugged ridge while I threaded the new bolts, but I got it. This is where the extra hands would be handy.

The video that really helped me is here:

I hope this is helpful if you are thinking of replacing your tire carrier or hinges. It was not as bad as I thought it would be but it did take some time.

He might need to put a spare tire behind the spare tire to stop the bouncing. That thing is sticking way far out.

How about a pool floaty or an inner tube?

I just went through this process with a Morryde. Drilled, welded, torched and drilled my way though the process. Used a Rugged Ridge tire carrier too since I didn't have an OEM.

My 35s fit tighter and the new Dirtworx bumper neatly supports the tire.

My tailgate is super janky, so I will be replacing it pretty soon. One of those drilled bolts is unusable and I've been having issues closing the tailgate for years. It functions for now but will be getting a new tailgate and put some rubber snubbers on that one. The carrier and hinges seem very sturdy for now and I haven't had any vibration luckily. Hoping to do this within a month or two.

This setup looks a lot tighter than mine. Looks good!

You need to get some rubber snubbers on there to keep the tire from vibrating or you’re gonna damage your tailgate and/or hinges.

I've seen people use hockey pucks, racquet balls, mallets, etc. Any suggestion on how to extend them? I will be running a larger, deeper tire soon also, so it should be a bit closer. Going to wait for the new tires to measure and install the rubber snubbers.

Easiest way is stacking washers.

You can find bolt sleeves and spacers at most hardware stores.

Given that distance...well... temporary or not I'd be fixing that. But...if you really wanted to ...you could make spacers with square tube or round tube...the transmission skid plate spacer my PO installed (and I removed quickly) was just .185 wall 1" square tube.

What do you mean use tube? Psshh. By my math if he can get some decently thick washers he'll only need like 350 of them

125 thick ones.

You could take say 2" x 3" tube, drill and sleeve a hole through the center... although I bet you could get away with not sleeving for temporary use...best bet would also be cutting the piece long and folding and welding the sides to enclose the tube.

Hell you could paint a wood 2x4 black and drill a hole in it. Believe me I've seen just about everything.

You also might be able to find a heavy spring... stainless would be really nice...

I can bodge anything together...even make it look halfway decent.

P.S. In your case I'd buy a OEM tire carrier on eBay or from Dead Jeeps or Davey's Jeep...or a junkyard.

I’d get rid of the wheel mount that comes with the RR Spartacus kit (p/n 11546.61) and put on either an OEM mount or the RR p/n 11585.01 wheel mount which doesn’t stick out as far and also keeps the tire vertical.
Whichever you go with just add a 1” wheel spacer if needed to make the snubbers fit depending on your wheel offset and tire width you’re getting.
I’d get some more OEM snubbers off amazon and cut them flat, looks the cleanest IMO.
Some good info on this thread I started awhile ago, give it a read:
Full MORyde kit or upgraded hinges for 33s?

Keep in mind I’m still running a crappy bumper swing-out carrier setup so this is all just from what I’ve read previously when I was planning.
Once maintenance stuff quits showing up on my TJ going to a tailgate mount set-up is pretty much at the top of my list.
I plan on sticking to 33s, maybe go from 10.5 to 12.5 wide down the road but this is the set-up I’m planning:
-OEM wheel mount
-Bumper mounted support step (like what @TheBoogieman has shown many times)
-Extend snubbers with cut-off OEMs
-Upper hinge to roll-bar tie-in bracket
And possibly the MORyde HD hinges (p/n JP54-025) although it doesn’t seem like they’d be totally necessary

Any reason you went away from the warn tire carrier. I see you still have the bumper and post for it.

Tired of wrestling with a swing out tire carrier...it was a two handed procedure to open the back of the Jeep and if I was parked on a slope I might need a pulley and winch to hold the door open.

The Warn was also missing the driver side... completely manged and killed by a Smitty Built bumper on my wife's JK.

The main upright tube was swollen and expanded and cracked...PO let it fill with water and it almost looks like round not square tube.

And every bushing, hinge, bolt hole was worn, wallered, and bent. And the latch stuck.

My sanity is greatly improved.

I'll probably use it as a railing for the loft in my shop.

I have a feeling I can find some thick spacers. I'm going to take the spare off until I get the new tires and rims (that hopefully sit deeper, then I'll measure

I'm going to throw a 33 instead of a 31 on the back, also getting new rims so hoping they sit a bit deeper. I ordered some OEM snubbers and they are on the way. I'll likely have to add the spacer. If it still looks insane sticking out like that, I'll replace the tire carrier and tailgate but keep the RR Spartacus Hinge. My tailgate is so beat from running the stock carrier so long that I'll try to run this setup a bit longer before doing the tailgate at the same time.

Thank you for the part number on the more shallow wheel mount! I'll be ordering that with a new tailgate eventually!
