Looking for some input before I decide whether to repair or retire this TJ.
2001 Wrangler Sahara, 4.0, 5-speed, original owner. This Jeep has been great to me, and I hate the thought of our time coming to an end.
Brought it in recently for overdue maintenance (brakes, shocks, tires). During the oil change, the shop found metal shavings in the oil. Shortly after that, on short drives, it developed a noticeable loss of power and a flashing CEL. I was able to limp it home by keeping RPMs low. It’s been parked since and hasn’t been restarted.
Based on that, I’m assuming internal engine damage (bearing failure, etc.), but I haven’t torn into it.
I’ve been quoted around $5k for a rebuilt/replacement 4.0 installed.
The other variable is rust. There is visible rust on the body and underside (photos below), but I don’t have a solid frame of reference for what crosses the line from typical TJ rust to structural concern. Frame appears intact to me, but I haven’t done a detailed inspection of known problem areas yet.
What I’m trying to determine:
Appreciate any insight from those who have dealt with similar situations.

What I’m trying to determine:
- At what point does frame/body rust make an engine replacement a poor investment on a TJ?
- Which areas should I inspect closely (frame rails, control arm mounts, skid plate crossmember, etc.) before committing to an engine?
- Given the symptoms (metal in oil + rapid loss of power), does a full replacement make more sense than a rebuild in most cases?
Appreciate any insight from those who have dealt with similar situations.
