Hi All I hope someone can help me with my key issue. I'm mechanically declined so I will have my friends with mechanic skill help me.
I have a 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ with 140,000 miles. Its only a recreational jeep not an every day jeep.
About a month ago my son in law wanted to use my jeep... I was out of town at the time so I told him to use my spare aftermarket key. Prior to this I had an issue with my jeep randomly die'ing out. After spending $1000's on every sensor and a fuel pump, a buddy fixed the issue with a zip tie. My battery was not bolted down and was rocking and hitting the metal frame which shorted out my ECM. Once I changed my ECM all was well. My spare key was programed before I replaced my ECM. When my son on law drove my jeep, it made it to his destination about 20 miles away. When he was heading home it died out and would not start....He did say the key indicator flashed. It cranked every time but would shut down after 3 seconds, safety feature. I parked the jeep at my home and tried to start with original grey key but no luck. The next day I tried it and it started fine but I did not drive it; I let it run for a while. I finally decided to take my jeep to work; I drove it 3 miles and it died out and would not stay running; the safety feature auto shut off returned. I then had an ignition part (square box on left side of steering column changed out, it was under warranty so I had nothing to loose. When we changed that part it would still die out after cranking. The next day it started and seemed fine. Now it runs but I find it misses in 3rd gear when my rpm's are high plus the key dash light turns on and off. The only other thing I did before this spare key issue was had a buddy hot wire my AC to the blower motor on high and added switch to turn it on an off. He did have the wiring reversed at the blower motor; the fan AC would only blow low. Once we fixed the reversed wiring it worked fine. I'm not sure if the wiring was reversed or if the fan was installed backwards. The reason I mentioned this is because this was done a week before the key issue started. My jeep still runs but the key indicator light appears and it will die out at times. It does start but I'm scared to drive anywhere due to this issue. The check engine light stays on and it actually started blinking the other day. I was gunna trade my jeep in so we risked it and drove it to a dealer in a town 40 miles away. On the way back the check engine light started blinking then went back to it normal on indicator. The car I was looking at was not worth it so I did not trade it in. I'm not sure what to do next, change the key ignition part; replace the ECM ?I think theres a way to remove the SKIM device but I'm not 100% sure. We did check for loose wire connections but did not find any. Any help will be appreciated. I really dont want to bring it to a dealer to be diagnosed. To sweeting the pot, who ever solves this issue will receive some real Cajun seasoning by mail from south Louisiana, HA ! Have a Good Weekend and thank you in advance.
