Kill Switch / Starter / Electrical Question

Hello, I was working on a custom kill switch. I have a 3 prong switch and it's the only one that will fit in the specific location and orientation that I need, otherwise i'd just use a two prong switch. I was planning on connecting the switch directly to the starter under the Jeep. There are two wires coming out of the solenoid, a thick red (I assume goes to the battery) and a thinner dark wire (I assume goes to the ignition). Can I just connect the switch to the wire going to the ignition? I made a diagram and attached. Seems like it would work. Let me know. Thanks!

Connecting the kill switch to the thin dark wire coming out of the solenoid, which is most likely the wire going to the ignition, should interrupt the electrical signal to the starter when the switch is turned off. However, keep in mind that this switch will only affect the starter operation and may not completely disable all electrical systems in your Jeep.

If you are looking to install a more comprehensive kill switch that disables all electrical systems, including things like fuel pumps and ignition as well, you may want to consider consulting a professional or referring to a wiring diagram specific to your Jeep TJ model. This will ensure that all necessary circuits are interrupted when the switch is turned off.

Keep in mind that a starter interrupt switch won't prevent a manual transmission vehicle from being push started. You would need to interrupt other circuits as Chris posted.

I put an electric fuel pump on a Mustang of mine, and I hid a shut off switch in the console. Unfortunately, I forgot to turn it off, and my Mustang was stolen. Good part of it is that my Mustang didn't like people who would run it, and the transmission line would come off, and stop the vehicle from moving at all. My Mustang was found undamaged in the San Fernando Valley, Ca. I went to pick it up from the police department, when the neighbor's called the police when they saw guys running from it. I just popped the transmission line back on, filled it with fluid, and it was fine. Someone had stole my keys, when I was in the gym and I wasn't watching. The alarm didn't help, because they had my keys, but the kill switch on my electric fuel pump would have saved me, if I had just remembered to switch it off. Nothing loss, but that was a good lesson all around. Lesson #1) Never lay down your keys. You never know who is watching you. Lesson #2) If you have a kill switch, use it.
