So I got my 2.5 L 3-4 months ago and since this last month I've been hearing a sort of knocking / clicking noise that's been going on and off, not sure where it's coming from but it happens when my engines cold and I am either at a stop light, going slow, or when I'm turning my car at sharp turns. Really weird, a guy at the tire kingdom said it was just the fan motor but I've been looking it up and it might be something else. I'm nervous bc the inspection showed that at 122k, the motor is in great condition but I've recently spent a lot on a lift I got and don't want another hole in my wallet. Any help will be appreciated.

Can you shoot a quick video? Pop the hood and have a buddy slowly press the gas then let off. Don't rev it too high and drown out the noise that we are looking for.

Could just be the typical TJ lifter tick, but I'll wait to hear the video!

The only way to upload videos is to post it on YouTube and then copy the link here (which will automatically embed).

As much as I'd love to host videos natively, most servers simply aren't setup for video hosting. Hence the reason so many people rely on YouTube.

I'm assuming you know how to upload it to YouTube?

Okay. Funny noises can be hard to diagnose without actually hearing them. A lot of the noises our TJ's make are just part of them being TJ's and an old hand at it can sometimes tell you right off the bat what it is. So, if we can't get video then you will have to start by popping the hood. Slowly work your way around the front and listen for the noise. Move back and forth until you have nailed down where it is coming from. Have somebody slowly rev the engine to see if it stays at the same level or increases along with the engine rev.

Hello Nick,
I don't want to sound stupid or demeaning in any way but in all my years of existence some things are really simple. Remove anything and everything from the vehicle and I mean everything. Empty the glove box console spare tire and everything removable. If you still have the noise, get an automotive stethoscope from e bay (about $6.00) and systematically probe each and every component in the engine compartment. The scope will reveal noises your ear will never pick up. But if you state that it is most pronounced in sharp turns I would tend to think that it is not coming from the engine. My brother recently had a disturbing noise in his pickup truck, he took his dashboard apart to try to correct it but no luck. I rode with him and after ten minutes I zeroed in on a small storage compartment between the sun visors. In there was a small pen type flashlight rolling around making this noise. When I pulled it out and showed it to him, he stated "I always wondered what happened to that light" I hit him in the forehead with it and told him to leave me alone for the rest of the day.Problem solved and I hope yours is so simple as that. Good luck and be patient looking, hopefully you will find it without too much trouble.
