That's mainly what i was wondering, like does it feel like you could rip it open with a screwdriver? The UWS one i was looking at was .063 which seemed about right. Given the GR8TOP is tailor made for the LJ i decided to order it and give it a try.

I'm sure it's a good bit heavier than the aluminum box you are considering, as it has heavy slides and the additional bracketry to mount it. But it you are concerned about security, you would have a tough time getting into this thing. The box itself is locked, and has matching keys to my underseat boxes, but I just lock the tailgate.

Ah nice, i didnt see this version where it keeps the rear seat in place. Ya that's a pretty nice setup. It doesn't look *too* heavy. A bit more than the Gr8tops box but probably functionally worth it.
beside the price (dam anything you can slap a jeep tag on immediately goes up 300%).
i think the depth is better, should sit just below the rails, and would still allow the rear to be covered if desired and you get some slope to keep it tight to the seats.
Another nice thing is that you can mount it off the deck, and leave lots of space underneath for recovery gear, welding cables, jumper cables, axle shafts, and the like. And as I said, I also have stuff mounted on the top.
'course, if I didn't carry all this crap I may have made it up Widowmaker...
If someone local to me is looking for an LJ storage solution, and doesn't need a back seat, send me a message. One of the LJ owners in a local club has a very nice custom aluminum box for sale. It's built to the LJ, is removable, and sits where the backseat was. It's also lockable and bolts to the floor, using the seat belt mounts. If it wasn't for the fact that I need the backseat, it would be in my jeep now. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it is Rhino Lined.

Actually their pricing for the custom LJ box is right in line with generic sized boxes. That aluminum box I started the thread with is $430 vs the gr8top is $375

Got a picture of it? I need the rear seat also but I'm always on the lookout for ideas. I could definitely see myself making something custom out of aluminum later.
what i see is, if i got off my lazy ass and learned to tig i could make a small fortune.

Yup, same with me but I have so many expensive tools I need to buy before Tig! For this project I think I could get away with solid aircraft style rivets and build a tuffy like drawer out of like 1/4" 6061. But Blaine has shown some Easter eggs of a tailgate spare holder design that eliminates the stock latch and I want to do this before I make a full custom storage solution.
That had nothing to do with widowmaker, it was a technique problem and none of us knew what it was. Next time.
All the costs listed above, plus the lost space by the drawer slides/mechanisms etc. are why I built my storage enclosure Cost me like $160 in steel and a bit of my time and has a larger inside volume than any of the drop in boxes/drawers.

In reality a bunch of that stuff would've got you up no problem! Winch + rope and just need yourself an anchor from the bypass group
