All the costs listed above, plus the lost space by the drawer slides/mechanisms etc. are why I built my storage enclosure Cost me like $160 in steel and a bit of my time and has a larger inside volume than any of the drop in boxes/drawers.

Your setup is solid, with a pry lip between the tailgate and platform it would be a good solution.

For now i just need something that will drop in. I can't start a project until i have a vision of the solution and just haven't wrapped my mind about how i would build the perfect contraption. Since im paranoid about getting stuff stolen just need something lock-able while I get around to the perfect solution.

The perfect solution for me would involve the following:
fold-able platform, doesn't rely on tailgate lock for security, thick walled aluminum (1/4"?), electric actuator interior lock (no riveted handle)

3/16" is plenty tough and would take fair sized (noisy) tools to get into it.
6061 can be a bitch to bend it has to have a radius. 50 series is friendlier to bend.

I'd be focused on utilizing solid rivets in lieu of bending where possible.

You're right 3/16 would probably be plenty tough

Makes sense though, I spent a fair amount of time thinking about what dimensions etc. I wanted it to be before ever even ordering the steel. And I think we discussed the fact last weekend that there were options I left out just because I wasn't sure I was actually up to executing them skills wise.

I talked to a number of people about the spool and the consensus was its kind of a shitty solution.

This is the box I’m using and it’s working out purty good. I did have to cut it down about a 1/2 inch because I linex the tub. It probably would have fit without the bed liner. Like that the box has a lock and I can also lock the tailgate.

I got it from a local truck outfitting shop. It’s a Rawson Koenig Industries. Dimensions are 36”Wx14”Hx16”D, it’s a under mount toolbox.
