Looking at a TJ (new to site)

I am looking at a 1997 TJ, Owner said it has No rust ( we will see on that) it has 106,000 miles on it. Manual 5 speed, 2.5 Inline -4. Any known problems with that engine or trans to look out for? Is that engine under power for this jeep? Is there anything other common problems I should be looking for?​

Really crawl underneath and look for rust on and inside the frame. I’m partial to the I6 motor but there are plenty of members with the 4 cylinder. Depends on what your plans are for it.

The 2.5 is underpowered for daily-driver use, especially on the highway, but if you only use it to off-road or tool around town, it's fine. The 5-speed can help you squeeze out more power compared to the auto.

The 4 cyl. Is a great motor.. but be more careful and pay more attention than I did. Check the frame really good, mine rotted out at the rear track bar mount. And I didn't see how bad of shape it was in until it was too late.

You’ll find the ol one hump vs two hump camel argument here....drive it and drive a 6cyl. Is my suggestion.

I personally would never buy a 4 cylinder TJ. I don't mean to offend anyone buy that, but having owned a 4 cylinder XJ... never, ever, ever again.

I currently own 2 TJ's. One with the 2.5 and one with the 4.0. The 2.5 IMHO is under powered. I would probably not buy another one but for my wife she is fine with it. As for gas mileage....neither is good lol.

Research and search the market thoroughly. Michigan would ordinarily not be part of my hunting grounds due to rust. I'd create a wish list such as: 4.0, auto or manual tranny of choice, Dana 44 in rear, zero rust, zero lift preferred, etc.

The reason I prefer stock and zero lift, it can cost more to right past mechanical wrongs than starting fresh with wisdom. Deciphering past owner's madness can be daunting. I'd start looking in an area with less rust. Weed out problems before purchase.
