Looking at another LJ, thoughts?

So another LJ caught my eye that's already built. My question is, is the price right for what it has and are the parts used for the lift good quality? I was originally thinking of building my own but after seeing what people want for a stock LJ it seems this might be a better route since it already has most everything I want including a diesel. Its a little taller and has bigger tires than I want but for what it is what do you guys think?

I think almost everybody on this forum has seen this rig. It’s a manual isn’t it? If it was an auto I would be VERY tempted. It’s got everything, and it’s completly done. I know I’m a black twill soft top fan boy hahha but I would also like that one to have a hard top with it, but I really think that is all that is missing from that one. It’s beautiful. What’s the price again? It’s on autotrader and Craigslist I believe.

its listed for just under 29k.. I am looking at it this weekend, he has sent me detailed pictures of the frame and it looks rust free as well.

Just for comparisons sake to show how good of a deal that is. The link above is an AEV highlined LJ with 37s and pintlers, but in no way near as good shape as the saharacon.

I think it’s a great deal considering all that’s been done to it. The issue I have is that the 4BT is such an obnoxiously loud engine.

that's my concern about the engine as well. but if the jeep is still a good deal with what has been done to it I can always swap it with the R2.8 down the road if the 4bt is that bad. I just don't know if what they did is good quality work and parts if that makes since. From what I have read those Long arm kits are pretty good but no personal experience with any of it.

I would def think it would need 4.56 at the least. I’m wondering if that’s a typo honestly. With all the work that was done to it to skip gears seems very odd.

I don't know a lot about the smaller Cummins, but I know if the torque curve is anything like my 6.7 Cummins, then 4.56 or 4.88s or anything like that would probably not be very good on the highway. My Cummins likes to cruise around 1600rpm and 1800-2000rpm with my 18,000lb camper.

he said the rpms are around 1600 to 1700 at 70 mpr. For on the hwy that seems good to me but I don't know what it will be like in low range. I'll see when I drive it.

My duramax has 3.73 gears and 35" tires, weighs 7500 lbs with fuel and driver, and has no need for more power or gears. 665 ft lbs, I don't think the 4bt has that much, but I also don't think gears are necessary for the size and weight of the jeep. All the power most diesels make is below 2000 rpm. It seems like a good deal of everything is functional. All the parts and even the tires are higher end brands, rather than rough country and cheap Chinese mudders...

I'd say the gears are spot on for the motor and trans combo. The ratios are almost identical to the nv5600 in my tow rig. Plan to bang a lot of gears, mine is a 6 speed but I'm grabbing 4th as I finish crossing an intersection from a red light. That's just between the 3rd and 4th gear ratios of the nv4500. I know a guy who spent 20k or so to have a 4bt swap done on his TJ, it was for sale a couple years later as he hated driving it. Said it drove like a tractor after the swap. If you go test drive the thing don't get caught up in the cool diesel noise and torque. Make sure you pay attention to the stuff that will annoy you in a couple weeks.

According to the carfax it’s had 3 owners and it started its life in OH, so I’m sure there is some surface rust. Just curious what the frame looks like. Also try and get some sound clips of that diesel, bet it’s gonna sound mean. Get ready to shift like crazy hahaha.

There is a gorgeous red LJ that has been for sale for a while in California with a smog legal V8 swap. In my opinion it has the right stuff like heavy axles loaded with ARBs, proper gears, good proven lift combo, good high line fenders and 37” tires. That rig is on the market for $33k. I’d guess he’s got double that into it.

I don’t know the person or the Jeep, I just think it would be a great rig to have.

That one is really nice... Wonder where he got a high pinion 44 though. Maybe a shortened JK axle?

Yeah I can do that, I'll see if I can grab some pictures for you.. here is a video clip of the 4bt, sounds like its idling a little high to me but that should be an easy fix
