Sounds like words of experienceI'll be that guy that says you should check your states vehicle code. Don't want to be rolling around with a probable cause mod if you've got warrants.

Here's what I ended up doing with my plate re lo. Installed onto tailgate vent louver using universal plate bracket that I had laying around. Thanks for everyone's input.

Looks nice, did you wire a light for the plate? If so how did you do it you run the wires to that?
I went with this and unlike some of the images, put the brake light at the top.

After installing the Savvy taillights, the stock location didn't work and with my bumper/carrier, moving the tag down was not an option. The tag would have been partially hidden behind the spare carrier.

I like the curved plate idea. I replaced my tail lights with a stock sized LED unit. The light coming out of the bottom of those things is enough to see an ant walking by on the ground 
Thanks. I wired a light (LED strip) above plate into passenger side tail light feed. Light wasn't here when I took pic. Ran wire through tailgate and out at hinge side inside body. Gave it enough slack to allow gate swing and wrapped wire in protective sleeve.

This is GREAT! I just relocated my Plate to the center of my tire with an aftermarket small light. But, after seeing yours, I remembered I have an old Tail Light similar to your that will work GREAT...Never did figure how or when I could use it I got it at an antique car flea market because it was soo different - Now I can copy your Idea. THANKS.. Thanks for being creative and sharing.

I got the idea back in the early 80’s and fabed one for my ‘73 FJ-40.

I used an aftermarket 'Hooke" license plate bracket - and attached a Tag Light from an old boat trailer. I hooked the Tag Light to a 2 wire disconnect ( so that I could remove tire with and license plate & light). Then. grounded the Neg to the Jeep door and ran the Positive to the old Ground wire of the 3rd brake light. Then disconnected the ground wire of the 3rd brake light to the jeep door with the tag light ground. Used the old ground wire from 3rd brake light to run a tag light positive thru the door 3rd brake contacts on the door and the TUB...(after disconnecting the factory ground in the fender well) . Hope you followed all that - it was NOT a big deal just took some time changing the 3rd brake light ground and re-connecting the positive taillight to the spring contacts at the door and body.
How did you wire up the brake and tag light to come on separately?

Still don’t know how to wire together so tag light and lights come on together and brake light separately.

Sorry for the delay. My SoCal. Mtn. home doesn't have internet service.
I took the factory 3rd brake light wire harness from the tub and extended it to what you see in the pic. That way it has a dedicated ground. For the tag light, I just spliced in to the wiring for the right tail light, under the tub. And used split loom to follow the hinge on the tire carrier to the light.
I also removed the wiring in the tailgate and stuck it in the used parts box. And installed rubber plugs to cover the holes in the tub and tailgate.
