Looking into upgrading my TJ speakers

The tweeters are just standing for now

Strictly testing, and Im not fully completed with my total install yet either. Its all test n tune before finalization.

I will need to print the tweeter stands before I make it permanent and road worthy.

I need to contact Infinity because Im not 100% sure if they rated their speakers 1m/1v like is standard or 1m/2.83v which is the common false advertising Im seeing alot more prevalently lately

At least Crutchfield lists the speakers accurately but they dont have these now

Late reply due to work...You're skillet is very good which allows you to think outside the box so I get why you would not be happy with those Kickers.

As for the 2.83 volts, my assumption of that metric is to think of that being equal to the 1m, with the exception the 2.83 volts assumes an 8 ohm speaker. If not using an 8 ohm then you are no longer comparing apples to apples. Using a 4 ohm speaker reduces sensitivity by 3db(double power). @Jerry Bransford is technically sound and may be able to elaborate.

So that's why these Infinity speakers may require more power, to actually play loud.

I stopped playing games with brands that play shenanigans, and a few years back I went to Audiotec Fisches Match brand for a DSP/AMP. Super easy to install, and the DSP takes some time to learn, but if you are into audio you should look into this so you can go fully active. This is how I have a dual 10" sub with quick disconnect. All plug and play...

Has anyone tried to install super tweeters in the dash instead of component speakers. My overhead speakers are way louder and effective than the dash speakers so I faded them out. I’ve been thinking about trying to stuff a bullet/super tweeter in there and the JL dual 8” powered subwoofer behind the back seat. I feel that might be a sweet setup.

I dont know what a “super tweeter” is , but I just finished my stereo. I tried the Kicker CS coaxials that many like, and sent them back. No coaxial that low is going to project a proper soundstage at your knees

Also tried the Infinity reference 5.25 components but they were too weak to match the Skar Audio TX65 in the roll bar pods. So I sent those back also

I ended up with the Polk DB+ 5252 components (~$200) up front and the tweeters on top of the dash in the corners. This is what Crutchfield recommended to match the Skar speakers.

That projects a waaaay better sound stage at the listener. Keep in mind I have 100w RMS to ea speaker as well as a 10” self powered sub to round out the sound for Rock/Meral

Theyre 3-4” tweeters. Very loud and they produce clean, crisp sound.

Fwiw, Im currently redoing my ‘03 TJ stereo system. Ive watched alot of YT videos on what people have chosen. Didnt wanna go tooo crazy, but also want a good system sound

The #1 chosen speakers have been Kicker coaxials with the yellow/gold tweeters. So , I ordered them to test & install. To me , these seem basic and low mid end but gonna test it

So far going with
Kicker 5.25” with the $90 PODs in the dash
Kicker 6.5” for the sound bar boxes
Kicker CompRT 8” shallow sub for console
(The sub requires a custom box fabrication)
SKAR Audio A/B 5 channel amp driving it all

Metra double din center dash piece
Atoto 7” control / deck

Now Ive been doing stereos for 25 years as a metal head who likes it LOUD. After unboxing the Kickers, I feel like the Magnets are pretty small, and thats telling. So I ordered the Skar Audio TX65 also to compare the 6.5” options in the rollbar. They look beefier. The 5.25” Kicker might work ok for the dash tho, since its a tighter fit

I reaaaally wanted the SKAR pro audio front and rear but they only make 6.5” and no 5.25” in that particular category. Their separate pro-audio tweeters are insane

Im wagering these will sound better in the bar
But….time will tell

I might go with these speakers without an amp and see how it goes. I got a new low end Alpine deck in the Jeep last night. The factory radio had died. The factor speakers sound like ass.

I would advise going with a lower RMS and higher efficiency rated speaker if going exclusively off head unit power.

Headunit power numbers are VERY inflated.
If it says 50w x4 ch, youre likely getting 20w per channel

may wanna try the infinity components up front if thats your goal

Holy shit those things are HUGE
4lbs ea 🤩,

where the hell you gonna mount em??
I’m going to try to get them mounted where the speakers go in the dash. It’s gonna take some ingenuity but I think it can happen. I have to get my hands on them first to see. I’ll update for sure 😂

Do you have any recs for speakers that fit this? I'm looking at most $100/pair.

Try amping the front speakers and run the overhead off the head unit.

thx, just popped in this morning and I'll take a look later.

Budget and amplifier involved?

Off off the head unit these would be nice.

looking to run a small class d amp as my current alpine head unit is a joke for speaker power. looking for something like a soundstream 5 channel that will fit up in the dash.

Adding the 5 channel soundstream to power my Polks was a major upgrade over the alpine unit. Way more output and much richer sound. I’ve been jamming to my tunes with no windows and half doors going 80 mph. It’s a cost effective game changer.

- soundstream under the steering column
- 5.25 polks in dash pods
- 6.5 polks in the sound bar
- 6.75” kicker sub 4 ohm dvc wired to 2 ohm load.
- android deck (will install a double din sony or pioneer in the future).

Those Soundstream amps can handle 2ohm speakers, you should seriously consider using the BLAM Relax series (entry level). 5.25" and 6.5" are solid. I run the 5.25" in my overhead pods. These will play louder and clearer than the Polks.

Thanks for sharing this.

I really like that there isn’t separate tweeter or need to install the speakers in a pod on the dash. That was my biggest issue with the Blams I had seen.

If anyone is looking for other ideas on amplifier mounting, this fit perfectly under the center console after I tossed the janky OEM sub out. Just fabbed a hold down bracket and hot glued material for padding

Its also the hop point for my new 10” sub RCA outs
The soundstream I sent back, this was far more reviewed and available

thanks for this info. had read it before but couldn’t seem to find it today. was good to reread. leaning towards the polks for the dash and speaker pods on roll bar. not 100% sure but i thought i once saw that a 6 1/2” would fit in the speaker pods on the roll bar.

I'm guessing you already did all of this, but for anyone else, 6.5s do fit into the roll bar, you'll just need a drill bit or two for a couple additional holes. I have 6.5s in mine and it only took this gal about 60 minutes in full to get em in.

Same here. I did this about a month ago. I ended up using one of the factor holes and had to drill 3 other holes per speaker.

I ended up taking that entire sound bar off to drill the holes. That way I could get leverage by drilling down and putting my weight into it versus trying to drill up.

you are correct, i simply drilled new holes and added poly fill inside speaker pods before installing speaker. sounds great!

I should really stay out of this one. But, I will interject one statement from Wikipedia regarding quadraphonic sound systems.

"Reproduction in the rear speakers should be of the same quality or almost the same quality as the front speakers. Ideally, it is preferred to use four identical speakers." The reasoning is obvious, at least to me. Look at Bose systems. They are tiny speakers providing some of the best sound. Size really doesn't matter. What is most important is the sound balance so all speakers reach your ears equally, with the same sound quality, preferably with four identical speakers.
