Irony: getting shot at by a war protester during the first gulf war at Eglin… thank god there was a Spector gunship on the range who had the sensors to spot the fucker and guide law enforcement to where the prick was hunkered down.

'In Honored Remembrance of Our Fallen Postal Comrades'
Memorial at Joint Base Balad (LSA Anaconda), Iraq 2006

The 1544th Transportation Company from Paris, Illinois ( featured in the top right of this memorial) suffered its first death within 24 hours of entering Iraq and its total losses included 3 commanders and 2 sets of twin brothers. At the time, only one National Guard company in Iraq had lost more soldiers and ultimately these losses were so profound that an Army general took the nearly unheard-of step of shifting the unit to less dangerous duty for its final months in Iraq.

The 1544th was assigned to escort mail and supplies along some of Iraq's most deadly routes including Route Irish- the infamous 7.5 mile stretch from Baghdad’s Green Zone to the airport, often in vehicles that offered little protection.

Learn more here about the 1544th and the town that supported them:

I feels ya. My Brigade lost 142 out of the divisions 214 soldiers lost from the invasion Mar 2003 to april 2010. most during 2007. During that 07 Campaign 901 soldiers died. our Brigade accounted for just over 3K "enemy combatants" Most of that was done in Sadr City and eastern Bagdad.

What'd you say?? Can't hear over this ringing in my ears....
I casually mentioned to my doc (civilian private practitioner) at my annual checkup a few months ago that my left ear occasionally goes completely deaf only to come back to life after a minute or so with a high-pitched ringing that lasts for about 10 minutes. He got all concerned & said "how long has this been going on, you need to see an ENT immediately!"

I said "I dunno, like ten years? I kinda got used to it, never thought to bring it up until now".

My hearing is SHOT from shooting without hearing protection and then having a few mortars & rockets hit close enough to ring my bell a few times.

Now the VA in all their wisdom has me rated for hearing lose in my left ear and it's military related but my right ear isn't??? Go figure.

Lol. VA equations are the best.

I just spent too much time around jet engines. Lots of swapping headsets around to talk to pilots while the jet's running. A few seconds of 150dB engine noise from a few feet away at a time over 20 years takes its toll. Combine that with thousands of hours of being right there even with ear protection is less than ideal. Oh well.

Never been a combat guy, but I've always wondered how the hell you all communicate with each other when rounds are let loose.

The VA has me 10 percent disabled with my hearing, ringing all the damn time and hearing lose. Too many 50 cal rounds and me being the shooter on a rocket launcher up the rivers in Vietnam.

Hand signals or YELLING if you aren't lucky enough to have squad radios. The high speed guys get some fancy setups that work really good.

I'm not even gunna get started on the VA BS and their rating system or how it all adds up.
