Little know facts about Tabasco sauce - It was invented by Edmund McIlhenny and made from peppers grown on Avery Island, LA. He determined when the peppers were ripe by comparing their color to a 'red stick' he had. Yes, a baton rouge! His grandson, Walter McIlhenny, joined the VA National Guard in 1931 and served on the rifle team. In '35 he transferred to the USMCR and was made captain of the USMC rifle team. Called to active duty for WWII, he spent 31 months in the western Pacific, B Company, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Div. At Guadalcanal he received the Navy Cross, Silver Star, and Purple Heart. Upon retirement, he was promoted to Brigadier General. He went back to LA and took over management of the family business, making Tabasco Sauce. He was instrumental in getting a small bottle of Tabasco included in each MRE. Today, the business is still run by the McIlhenny family.

And why does the Navy have name tags on the back of their pants?
