MORryde HD tailgate hinge install update

There is no need to worry about blistering paint to begin with. If you need a flame shield for this job, this isn't the job for you.

LOL, I love how you're so critical of everyone. Other people might not have the expertise to do the job, which is why they're asking. Telling them not to do it is not the answer.

Ok. Then why stop at the fire blanket, if we are going err on the side of unnecessary and misplaced caution. :)

Btw I don’t have the morryde. I had to adjust my half doors at the hinge so they could close easier. But it’s the same torx bolts.

I've had good luck with all the various smaller hardware using an impact driver. It has the quick connect for 1/4 drive bits. It gives enough impact to help break any rust but not enough to break the hardware. And I'm driving a NY Jeep. So corrosion is common, tho minimal.

I also saw a Utube about a Rusty's tailgate hinge upgrade that claimed it was stout for bear. Anyone have any real world experience with the Rusty's hinges?

The issue with the various torx bolts around the TJ body isn't corrosion. Each one uses a thread locking compound. The reason we heat the bolts is to soften the compound.

I'm also curious about the Rusty's tire carrier, very similar design to the Morryde carrier but has a fully adjustable hub for tire size and backspacing. Reusing the stock non-adjustable tire carrier bracket is the main complaint I've read about the Morryde. The few reviews I've seen about the Rusty's were positive overall.

Installed mine tonight. No pesky torx on the 06.

Step 1: throw manual out. It's written as if installing 3 separate pieces, not a kit.
The 2 longer 1 1/2 bolts go in the top hinge. Everything else is 1 1/4 length. With the offset brackets installed, i don't see any reason why a 35 wouldn't fit. 37 might fit.

If your tailgate isn't exactly straight, it will straighten out as you bolt the bracket on, lol

Took about 2hrs from opening the box to done. I installed the high lift mount too.

The golden rule of aftermarket parts applies. Assemble loosely, then tighten.

I have my 35 mounted to MorRyde with stock carrier and no offset bracket. Fits great.

Started my install last night. Got 6 of the T40 bolts out with no problems. 2 are being a bitch. I didn't have time to mess with it today. Hope to wrap it up tomorrow.

Did you use heat?
No. A buddy of mine came over & we talked about what to use. We agreed the best way was to use a hammer impact. 6 of them came out first time. The Blackfoot impact socket I bought at Grainger was twisting from the torque. It never broke but ended up stripping the last two bolts. I drilled the heads off & both bolts came out by hand. I guess the head was seized on the hinge.

Only 3 of the 8 bolts came off mine without stripping. I tried heat and penetrating oil as well as impact tools. What worked best was to just drill out the heads of the bolts and then grab the remaining stud with vice grips and turn them out. Amazingly, the threads were not the issue on a 22 year old mid-west TJ, just the bolt heads corroded to the hinge (galvanic?).

Is there anyway to hold the tailgate open, I can only assume that with a 35" tire mounted if it is on any kind of a slope it must want close. And I can only guess it may want to slam closed. I am looking to go from my HEAVY Rock Hard 4x4 bumper and tire carrier. Don't get me wrong it has held up very well and taken lot of beatings, I am just thinking of loosing a few pounds off the rear

Warrior products makes a tailgate strut. I have one in my Jeep with 32s and I like it.

Not sure this will work for me as I am using a Trailgater table on the inside of my tailgate
