Last few years when I climb Telescope Peak in Death Valley those guys zoom around in the F22. I've had them pass inverted close enough I could see the guy staring down at me. I think they track you if they see you on their thermal scopes or whatever just for fun/training. I've never been to Star Wars canyon but I think it's outside the park and further North, they definitely enjoy flying the Panimint range. I was in a convertible north out of Trona and I had a jet pass over pretty close a decade ago, I pretty much shit a brick, it was close.

Anytime we found people out and about we would use it as a training exercise. Have the gunner hone their skills of tracking a vehicle or Person.

I'm used to being a target. My Dad worked for Hughes when they developed the first thermal imaging systems for the M1 tank. They needed a small target to test the system so I guess you could say that was my first job. I bet there's some classified footage floating around of me trying to stay warm somewhere in the Balona wetlands while they tried to focus or something.

Growing up in Vegas we always saw squadrons of fighter jets flying in and out of Nellis AFB. Their range is a couple hours north of Vegas and to get there to watch, you have to drive down a road known as the “extraterrestrial highway.”

This is an unofficial tradition, but if you saw jets while you were driving down said highway (small two lane highway) the signal was to weave your car back and forth over the two lanes. If the pilots accepted, they would use your vehicle for dry practice runs for a few minutes before returning on their route. They would pass so low sometimes it felt like an earthquake. Probably not something they do anymore with safety regs and the new price tags on fighters.

I've been to Father Crowley Point, but didn't see the jets running through Star Wars Canyon. I was buzzed by what I think were a couple of F-15s several years ago on Trona Wildrose Road on my way to Death Valley. I was riding my Husky dual sport. Got my attention.

I used to know a couple of F-14 guys who unknowingly buzzed a young girl on a horse near San Luis Obispo about 15 years ago. If I remember correctly she was paralyzed and they never flew again.
