New Tool Day

Okay thanks to @AndyG I stopped by Harbor Freight today to spend my $15.00 birthday gift discount they sent me in an email.

Probably a year or so ago @AndyG sent me a picture of this and said he had been using one for awhile.

Picked it up today to go in my Jeep toolbox.

Sad. I really want one of those but I’ve got six or seven cheap hammers in my toolbox.
Nothing like percussive maintenance 😆

I will probably try the compact 1/2 inch next.

The weight difference between the Hercules 3/8 (not much difference than the compact 1/2 inch) and the big Dewalt 1/2 impact is unbelievable.

I know Hercules is not Dewalt or Milwaukee, but for the home shop and with them being 15 minutes away, they are hard to beat.

Worth a try .

I have so many hammers it's not funny, this one went in the toolbox for when we go wheeling, because its pretty and new......... 🤣 🤣 ....... gotta impress the yahoo's i wheel with ya know. 🤷‍♂️:oops:

Worth a try .

Price wise the compact 1/2 inch is only $10.00 more than the 3/8 inch.

I know their tools have come along way, the Icon brand is right up there with Snap-on, Mac and Matco.

Hopefully their battery tools will be better than Craftsman, Ryobi and those.

I doubt they ever catch up to Dewalt or Milwaukee but for the budget home shop Hopefully they will be good.

Haven’t compared the prices. Makita is my tool of choice. Batteries $100 each for a 5ah. What are harbor freight going for?

They have a sale on right now 2 for $99.00. I have to get down there and buy 2 on a rain check because their out of stock.

Said goodbye to an old friend. My first “real” tool when we moved down to Atlanta and into a house from a condo.

I had one of those back in the day. The chuck failed quickly. I bought a cheap Porter-Cable 18v to replace it. The batteries were losing their capacity so I bit the bullet bought a Dewalt XR with an all steel chuck. Happy with it so far.

I’ve got a Hercules lineup and so far it’s been stellar.

1/4” impact
3/8” impact
1/2” impact
Drill
Air grinder
Band saw
Sawzall

Most are 20V, and one is 12V. Have several batteries: 2.5A (x2), 4A, 5A (x2), 12A. One died and I took it back and they replaced it. Battery warranty is 3yr. I think tool is 5yr. Maybe I want the Red stuff or Dewalt, but this is working for me now.

My son has some M12 stuff and he tossed it and uses the Hercules. Of course, the M18 Fuel is the real deal.

I will be getting more Hercules tools. They fit my budget, and HF is only 15 minutes from the house........

If I remember correctly, I bought their 20v angle grinder, a battery and charger first. Shortly after I happen to catch a 1/4” driver and a 1/2” impact on their As Is table. The sales person told me they were both returns and had a 5 day warranty. I ended up getting both of them for around fairly cheap, maybe 30-ish dollars each, I can’t remember for sure. Put a battery on them when I got home and both worked fine. Drove in some screws into a random 2x4 with the 1/4” driver and removed the spare on the Jeep with the impact.

There was a 3/8” impact on the table a month or so ago. I kinda wish I had got it just because. 😄

From my memory, I have:
20v angle grinder
20v 1/2” compact impact
20v 1/4” driver
20v rip saw
20v die grinder. I don’t really like it. I didn’t notice that it was not variable speed when I bought it.

12v right angle die grinder
12v 3/8” extended reach ratchet

latest tool purchase was a milwaukee m12 dremel (rotary tool) paid $78CAD during a sale. Having only used a cheap mastercraft (canadian harbour freight) pneumatic dremel up until buying this i've sure been happy with the freedom that comes with having no air line attached weighing me down. also got some cheapo carbide bits from amazon that have honestly shocked me by how well they work. havent tried them on cast steel but they chew through bearing races quite well.

See Post #228 from a little over a year ago in this very thread for my experience with the current, and previous generation, of the M12 rotary tool. I'm not a fan, and I love my Milwaukee cordless tools! Unlike most of my other Milwaukee stuff, the rotary tools aren't up to any kind of real work. I went to a pneumatic Dotco pencil die grinder for that.

I’ll look into the Dotco, thanks

That's valid. I've used mine for some bearing races in blind holes and for small jobs grinding and profiling mufflers and flanges for chainsaws. The pneumatic ones are certainly good for heavy sustained work for sure.

Been looking for a decent drill press for a while now. Finally found something worth my time and money, picked it up today. It’s not an old Clausing or Rockwell unfortunately, but it is a nice, HD machine.

It’s a mill/drill machine from Grizzly. It’s imported, but it’s built like a brick you know what house. The column is about 5”, the quill is 3” and the damn thing weighs about 700 lbs. Came with a bunch of tooling, two vices, a small three jaw chuck and an angle plate. This thing will be plenty handy to have around. I wouldn’t do heavy machining with it, it’s not a Knee mill, but for the small, occasional stuff I need to do? It’s going to be great.
