Not hearing a difference after replacing dashboard speakers

My TJ came with an Alpine unit & Sony Xplode rear speakers. I imagine the front speakers are stock as you can barely hear them & they buzz & pop. Wouldn't want to spend a fortune but it'd be nice to sound a little better. Not much bass at all.

If you're not wanting to revamp the entire system just yet given you just bought speakers, I'd suggest trying adding pods and polyfill. I have an older (2010ish) Kenwood head unit and amp that still work great and match the power output most recommend here.

The Kenwood speakers the PO had put in the dash still worked but the overhead speakers were blown. I ordered some Kicker 6.5" for the sound bar and then added the Boom Mat foam pods both in the dash and sound bar and packed the voids in the sound bar with polyfill. The combination did make a big difference and actually sounds pretty good considering I don't have a sub.

Back seat? Who has room for that.

I have a Sony HU and recently replaced the OEM speakers with JL 5.25 coax up front and Kicker 5.25 in the rear. I have the Quadratec sub in the factory location (center console). It sounds much better than stock. Though it would sound even better with an amp and better sub.

I have a pretty decent sound system in my TJ with not really a lot of money invested.. I have two polk audios in the dash, two midrange speakers in the soundbar and 2 6x9 in boxes in the rear part of the jeep... all the speakers are powered by a soundstream PN4.1000D that I stuck under my rear seat, if you add some new speakers but you are keeping the headunit as powersource you wont listen to any improvement that's for sure...

I know that some people will say that "its a jeep, you wont hear high fidelity stuff" but believe me when I say that you wont need a lot of money to have a decent sound in your rig...

If space is something critical to you, I would suggest you the soundstream stealth series, the 4 channel amp is of the size of a smartphone and will power your speakers with 90 watts RMS and you can fit it behind the dash...

last but not least.... I know you already invested in the speakers.... but if I may suggest..... I would get a bracket for use your 5.25" in the dash, add some 6.5" in the sound bar and just sell your 4x6s... you wont get too much from those 4x6s....

the links for all the stuff I mention to you are here...

bracket for the 5.25" speakers in the dash:

soundstream PN4.1000D amp that may fit under your rear seat (I have that one):

Polk Audio 6.5 speakers: (on ebay they will be cheaper)

System sounds great, Don. But Dude - your music selection.....

:D

when I show the video, half of the people likes the song and the other half says the same like you haha... but as long as they agree it sounds good.. I'm fine with it XD

It sounded good but it’s hard to judge your speakers while listening through my speakers.

what made a huge difference for me was to change the weaks 4x6s for the polk audio 5.25s with the bracket that tilts your speakers a bit into the driver/passenger instead of aiming into the floor... they are on ebay for like 13 bucks.. by physics is better for the sound that the speaker can be aimed into you... and the 5.25s can handle a lot more power than the 4x6s...

So scrolling through my Alpine settings, the first one that comes up is Subwoofer which doesn't do anything. So does that mean I'd already be able to power a sub right from the radio unit itself?

it means your head unit has a dedicated subwoofer channel on top of the 4 amplified speaker channels. you'll still need an amplifier to power the sub.

if your alpine works just as mine... when you select the "subwoofer" option it will stop sending the signal to the rear speakers from the speaker wiring "hi level input" and will send the signal only to the RCA output in the rear part of your headunit that its specifically for the subwoofer.. (depending on how many RCA outputs your headunit have) the reason is to have a better signal sent to the RCA output... here is the section of the manual that mentions what I'm saying...

Ps. dont try to power a subwoofer with your headunit, it will be a waste of channels from your headunit and wont have the juice to actually hear a damn thing.... subs usually requires >100 watts RMS, the normal alpine head units only send like 18 watts RMS per channel....
