I haven't seen @B1Toad's anywhere yet, that's for sure. Lot's of questionable stamped steel jobbies, along with some incorporating plastic (?). Might as well be old cheddar cheese...

All I know is I'm now obsessed with finding a decent filter socket for the Jeep, and have been since posting here. Suppose the rest of this evening's fecked...

Try one of those 3 jaws, as you turn it they tighten. Works great when you have a straight shot at the end of the filter or if a ratchet can access it.

No reason to use anything but your hand for install.

My only experience with one of those was watching a friend use it and one jaw bent and another snapped off. It was a tool truck brand, though I don't remember which one. While I don't think that really says anything about quality as much as it does what he paid for it, that has made me shy away from that type ever since. Any particular brand you recommend?

We had ours on the farm growing up if I had to guess it was craftsman. No idea what I’d buy if I needed one now.

Working on medium duty to heavy duty trucks I have the pliers. Still use them on my 2000 f150 and BB, always to take the filter off, install them by hand.

I put filters on with my left hand. Take them off with my right. A little oil on the o-ring, don't turn too far.

If the filter has a housing, I use my left hand to tighten it holding the socket in my palm.

The Jeep is the easiest filter to get to. My wife's car takes a 23mm socket so I had to go buy one.

Sometime wrapping it in sandpaper helps

I have the pliers style. In my Army days we used our belt, fucking humvees. I've had to use the screwdriver method @chili_pepper mentioned more then a few times. My success rate with that has been about 50/50. Sometimes it works and other times it's completely torn up the filter without even breaking it loose.
