I have a 99 tj 3 speed auto on 35's with 3.73 gears. Drove it this way for a while no issues. Installed a supercharger and now it overheats going up hill. I played around with it making sure it didn't need burped. Then took it for another drive. Overheated uphill again. While I was halfway up the hill I pulled over to let it cool off. When I went to leave again it had no power and would not move. I put it in 4x4 and it took off no problem and did not start over heating again. Is this possibly a sign the trans is overheating causing the issue? Going in for gears next week FINALLY! Thanks for any insight.

You would think for $6000 the tune would be spot on but I've been screwed by Charles Warner from day one. Guess I should not expect anything less from magnum powers. Should have done a v8 swap.

What are the tuning options for the tj? Hp tuner would be great since I have it for my silverado.

The link that @Chris posted above has a guy that tunes using HP tuner.

My Banks turbo setup is incredible. I can run full throttle (6 psi boost) up long steep hills on a hot day with the A/C on and it doesn’t overheat! It is a shame this mod is no longer available.
Every post you have ever made I’ve read about it has indicated your turbo has been a real success. I’d love to drive one.

I love turbos and was very disappointed when I could not find one for my tj.

How long since you installed it?
It's been almost 1 year since I started installing this piece of garbage he had no business selling a kit for a 99 but I'm not getting into that now. It's been installed for a few weeks but I need to solve the over heating before I can do anymore testing and find out what else is going to break.

Been reading through some old post looks like you have used Ryan's services. Did you have a tune done on a forced induction project? How was your experience? $700 for a tune is pretty steep so I'll need some references before using him. Thanks

Ryan from FRP is a member here on the forum and has been tuning Chrysler products now for about 10+ years I think. IMO he's one of the more knowledgeable people when it comes to tuning our Jeeps. Chris has one of his tunes on his Jeep but it's naturally asperated not forced induction.
Yep the price of entry is not cheap but as they say you get what you pay for. And if you read his recent post about tuning forced induction I think explains it pretty well. It you look around or go onto Facebook and look at his page there you'll find tons of people running his tunes on both naturally asperated & forced induction engines.

So I guess the question is what is your engine worth? You've already bought the supercharger so if you want to keep it you need to fix your issues.

Correction it is now $750 for a remote tune. This is all assuming that my tune is bad and causing the overheating. That's a pretty expensive guess. I think I'll start with a data log and post it up. See what people on the forum think of the tune.

How is $700 for a tune pretty steep? That’s entirely reasonable, and pretty much in the ballpark for a custom tune.

How many references did you check before you bought and installed that supercharger?

Well even if the tune isn't the issue wholly for the overheating if you read what Ryan wrote about the supercharger kit you have IMO I'd want to do it RIGHT.... You've already spent the money on the supercharger so it's either keep it and do it right or take it off and then take a 40% hit in resale.

I know the frustration of trying to chase down an overheating issue. But if it wasn't overheating BEFORE you installed the supercharger and it is now then I'd say that it's directly related to the problem. And since you don't have a water to air intercooler did you touch the cooling system during the install of the supercharger? If not then how can it not be related to the SC?

Do you have a wide band AFR gauge? You need to know what your air/fuel ratio is and that would directly tell you if it is your tune. So any way you look at it you're gunna have to spend some money.

I've had atleast 7 different tuners. The last got my twin turbo silverado running like factory and producing 750 hp to the wheels I payed him $600 and that is the most I've ever spent on a tune. So in my experience and opinion $750 is expensive. As far as reference for mp blower I only found 2. Unfortunately this is not the most popular mod to do to a Jeep tj. I also don't have nor want facebook and that probably cost me alot of information at times.

I do have a water to air intercooler so my IAT should be nice and low. I also have wide band not sure how you can tell you have a bad tune just by looking at your widebad gauge. For data logging its essential then being able to interpret what your seeing is key. If I could do that I'd tune all my own vehicles. As far as monitoring my wideband while driving all I need it for is to make sure I'm not going lean under boost.

This thread was to help me figure out the overheating issue not to spend alot of time discussing a tuners pricing and his ability to tune. If my tune is subpar then this will be easy to solve by a data log and seeing what more knowledgeable people think of it. Thanks for helping guys

OK by watching your AFR if you are running to lean it's going to make the engine get hotter than normal. So that is why I was asking if you had the gauge.

We are trying to help you but you didn't give a lot of info either.

Have you tried parking your rig on a angle or curb while trying to burp the cooling system? Sometimes that little bit of angle can get those air bubbles out. I had that problem once on a 300ZX TT that kept overheating. Because it's only doing it while going up hill which means it's under load then maybe doing the data logging is the next step.

Do you have a scanner that does live readings? I have one that I can drive with it sitting on my dash and can watch things like the IAT. Those are my thoughts at this point. Best of luck.

Yes I tried burping it on an incline. I did 5 cycles and the coolant level never changed I might drill a hole in the T Stat just to make sure. I do have hp tuner so I can do live data logging. I'm going to see if I have enough credits to get the jeep added. The only change to the cooling system was the removal of the mechanical fan and electric fan added. I think I'll take it for a drive later and keep a close eye on the afr and make sure it's not leaning out under load. Dealing with the sturgis motorcycle rally this week so not a good time for test drives and braking down. Do you think the 35's on stock gears (3.73) with the extra hp and torque migh be causing the transmission to over heat? Thanks for helping much appreciated.
