I have a 2005 4.0 w/ 117,000 miles and 6 speed. Jeep runs great. After30-45 of highway driving at 60 I get the engine light. Checking the code, it is 2096. I have done some research and have no exhaust leaks. Is this an O2 censor issue?

P2096 is the code for: Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank 1 sensor 2

That would be the lower, front O2 sensor. That would be what I would replace.

BTW, bank one is cylinders 1, 2, and 3. Bank two is 4, 5, and 6. Sensor 1 is pre cat, sensor 2 is post cat.

Word of advice, when replacing your O2 sensors, DO NOT use anything other than NTK / NGK O2 sensors. I can't stress that enough, I really can't. If you use anything but NTK / NGK brand, you will undoubtedly have issues.
 
Chris, would you happen to know the size of the O2 sensor? I have the same code, and would prefer to buy an O2 sensor socket instead of trying to use a regular wrench.

Just buy any O2 sensor socket. They're all the same size from my experience. I have yet to find a single O2 sensor that my socket doesn't work on.

They require a 7/8" wrench. Cut the wire off the old sensor and use a BIG wrench with a long handle to break it free. It's pretty guaranteed it'll be in there tight! Then you can use a slotted O2 socket available at your auto parts store to install the replacement. Those slotted sockets aren't strong enough to remove a seized O2 sensor, they can flex and bend open. The slot is for the wiring of the new O2 sensor to pass through.

P.S. I had one O2 sensor that had seized in the header so badly that my biggest 7/8" wrench couldn't break it free. I had to weld a long piece of scrap steel to the wrench to have enough leverage to break it free.

Well I replaced the O2 sensor and 30 miles later I am receiving P2096 again. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
 
You installed an NTK or NGK O2 sensor, not a Bosch, and you replaced the lower O2 sensor closest to the front of the Jeep? That is the Bank 1 sensor below the pre-cat as shown below?

Also, the pre-cats can cause false bad O2 sensor indications. My '04 TJ had repetitive O2 sensor faults that were only cured when both precats were replaced after one of them failed. Previous O2 sensor replacements did not help.

Thanks for the quick reply Jerry. Yes on the NTK and yes on the front lower sensor. I only get the code after about 30 miles and always at a speed of around 60-65 on the highway. The Jeep runs very good, so no symptoms other than the engine light. Also, not sure if this has anything to do with it or not, but I did use a can of the throttle body cleaner into the intake while the jeep was idling and about a third of the can manipulating the throttle. It idled a little rough prior to that after staring it back up after being parked from driving for 5-10 minutes. Problem with idle resolved. Started seeing the code after that. May not be related but thought I would mention it just in case. Thanks again for the help.

Thanks, I could pretty much say the same thing as you did there. Only replacing the cats proved to be the cure for the repeated errant bad O2 sensor codes. I haven't had an O2 sensor code in the several years since both precats were replaced.
