Problem Shifting O/D

To start, I’m not a mechanic or knowledgeable car person by any means but that’s why I’m on here. I have an ‘03 automatic, I usually hit that overdrive switch (turns it off) when going up a hill or having to really get going. It’s not often either. Past few uses (over course of a month) when I turn the switch back off (turns o/d back on), wrangler jumps to 3000 rpms and keeps climbing. If i let off gas she’ll decrease but the second you hit the gas again its at 3000 and keeps going up. Seems like it’s not completely shifting back into overdrive??

If the OD is off and you're turning it back on, the RPM should stay the same (if still under load) or decrease (due to shifting up).
RPM going up would imply that it's downshifting.
Unless you're using it backwards?

wrangler runs in overdrive naturally. hitting the switch turns overdrive off, google says thats for when you tow or go uphill. When i hit the button to turn off OD, the rpms keep increasing. not even sure if youd call it downshifting, but the rpms just keep increasing until i turn the car off and on again then it “resets”

When u experience this, are you switching OD to off when already in OD? If so what are your RPMs before and after u switch OD to off?

Or does this happen when you turn OD off in gears 1 through 3?

Yes, Rpms before are prob 2000 so instead of staying at 2000 for the course of uphill I switch OD off, rpms go to 3000/4000 then back to 1500/2000 but once i put OD back on they jump back to 3000 and keep climbing. no idea on gears it’s an automatic and out of my knowledge sadly lol

So they bump from 2000 to around 3000 if your throttle doesn’t increase when u turn OD off.

They shouldn’t drop back down to 2000 if you are still in third gear at the same engine and vehicle speed. This is a good point for us to confirm what’s going on.

This is when RPMs should drop to about 2000. If they were dropping to 2000 with OD still off and then jumping to 3000 when u switch OD back on then I’d be checking to see if it’s going into OD when u have OD off which then may cause OD to turn off and go into third when u switch OD back on.

Btw my $130 thinkdiag2 device from Amazon tells me my gear. You can use the device to select TCM data and select the gear, if OD is engaged, if you are in lock up, and can also track your engine speed (and more) all on the same screen.

It doesn’t do freeze frame but I got around that by doing a screen recording of my phone when it reports live data. That’s how I’m proving my current OD issue to the tranny re-manufacturer otherwise I’d be SOL with no credibility.

Here’s a short example of what I was tracking yesterday per the remanufacturer’s request.

I think I kind of understand that….Does it help if I simplify my question as, I don’t think my overdrive is turning back on until I turn car off and back on again?

Ok so you can switch out of OD but can’t get back to OD on unless u restart the vehicle.

Is this the case even if you are driving at lower speeds and soft on the pedal?

Maybe check your wiring and pins to the OD switch and try a different OD switch if you don't see any issues (mangled wire / corrosion / pushed or bent pin). But I’d also consider lookIng at the condition of the wiring and plugs at the TPS and PCM. I’d consider swapping in a different TPS since it’s easy to do…or checking that it’s working properly using a scanner. I swapped my TPS to prove to the tranny remanufacturer that it wasn’t the cause of my OD issue.

Btw I’m currently learning on the run with a different OD issue. Yours seems to be electrical where mine could be electrical or a pressure issue.
