Progressive Insurance wants to total my highly modified 97 Jeep Wrangler Sport

Hagerty requires a locked garage kept asset
For those of you thinkin about it

If an incident occurs they will just look at the odometer and estimate mileage per year from Day1 of the policy to see if its within expectations.

They did not require a locked garage for me, in fact I think one of the options was "driveway"

Yeah, it seems that if you have an existing policy with them for another vehicle, they have no problem adding it. But everyone I've seen who tries to get a new policy for just their jeep isn't having luck. When I added mine, I had an entire sheet I had to fill out that explained all the aftermarket parts and what brands they were.

That may be, I did have an existing policy with them

First remember anybody that wants to meet you halfway is usually a poor judge of distance.

Insurance companies get their money upfront.

Do you guys remember when things get bad in 2007 and eight? Even then very few insurance companies failed.

All they do is collect money from people to give them the idea that they are protected from loss and then they dole it back out as frugal as possible.

My father was an insurance agent so I’m not claiming that it’s evil, It put braces on my teeth and food in my stomach. ( But quite honestly my dad was so tight the braces were mom’s idea). He would have said we could get dentures when we’re older.

In negotiations-

As much as you can get rid of the idea that you have to be an obstinate , difficult, stand your ground person.

Get the adjuster to like you and to like your passion for your vehicle.

Get them to see your point of view and your financial commitment.

Then as nice as you can be a difficult obstinate stand your ground person. Just do it in such away they don’t see it happening.

“Let me get back to you”

“ Is that the best that you can do”

“ Do you think I should involve a third-party to get a better settlement”

“ Have you ever settled a claim on a similar vehicle with these particular upgrades”

“ How can I replace this for that much money?”

“ Let me think on it before I sign anything”

Do that as long as you have to do it then you can get into things like :

“ You’re fat alcoholic mother would give me more than that” later.

Remember negotiations are not about winning at any cost- They are about mutually arriving at a solution.

They are about getting them to see what they’ve got to do-

Statements like “ What you’re up against is I’ve got this much invested in these components...” ....you want to make sure they realize that that is their problem-not yours.

Also do not abandon the idea of stripping parts of the vehicle if it gets down to it

If you will keep the tone of the conversation enjoyable, And not be somebody that they want to just shut down....You will probably get a lot further.

In one sense life is a series of negotiations. It can really pay you to understand that.

Also be very careful what you put in writing it will stay there forever- And assume anything you put in writing that carries any emotion will be compounded.

If you keep it professional you’ll be proud later.

They're being paid to do what's right.

For them🤣

The agent is paid and trained not to underwrite unnecessary risk-

The underwriters are paid to further evaluate that and look out for the company’s profit and price accordingly

The adjuster is absolutely encouraged to limit loss -

If you get down to what is right they should honor the policy- Which is nothing more than a contract between both parties.

How many people read their insurance policy?

How have you never dealt with an insurance company?

It really depends on the actual person in my experience. We use the same company for a bunch of policies (multiple auto, home and business). Generally, we don’t have a lot of claims but 2 cases re my point:

Once we had significant damage to a house that may have been prevented by better diligence on our part. The company rep seemed aware of this and steered our report to allow the claim to be covered. I was very grateful.

Another time a thief broke into our business and stole some personal property of some value but more significant personal importance to me. I was very angry at the loss and then insult was added to injury when a different company rep refused the claim despite clear (to me) contractual wording that it should have been covered. The state insurance board was useless and the value wasn’t worth my time or a lawyer.

Point is, insurance companies are businesses but some people are nice and others aren’t.

My wife was stopped at a crosswalk and some people were crossing. Another driver rear-ended her at 40 MPH and she instinctively turned the steering wheel to avoid being pushed into the pedestrians. The other driver was covered by Allstate.

My wife was injured in the accident, taken to hospital in an ambulance and had numerous medical problems as a result for the next two years. Allstate fought tooth and nail to blame all of her injuries on her pre-existing disability. Finally after a year or so after going to see an Allstate doctor, doing depositions where she was interrogated in a stressful and combative atmosphere, etc. Allstate paid out the AZ minimum of $15k, of which all but $2k was taken up by the lawyer and medical bills.

Needless to say Allstate will never get a cent of our money as long as I live.

A friend has Progressive and they got a crack in the windshield. Progressive asked where the car was and the said the grocery store car park. Progressive then wanted the grocery store receipt before they would process the claim! Bizarre. Andy

He should of told them he went for the free samples.

I was involved in an accident and the other driver was completely at fault. My Jeep is at the shop now and a Progressive Adjuster called me and told me it was going to be a total loss. I told him I sent in documentation to Progressive of all the mods that were installed by a reputable shop totaling $17,000. The adjuster said, "Oh, I wasn't aware of that". So, I am beyond ticked off at the moment. So, I started researching how to combat a total loss. Here's what I found.

How to Fight an Insurance Company Over a Totaled Car’s Value

Receive a settlement offer from the insurance company.

Gather evidence, including an independent appraisal, the car’s sticker details, prices for comparable vehicles, photos of the car before the accident, and receipts for any features you added.

Send this evidence and a counteroffer to the insurance company.

If the insurance company does not agree to your counteroffer, contact your state’s insurance regulator to request help.

Ask your insurance company for third-party arbitration if necessary.

File a lawsuit as a last resort.

Does anyone know an appraiser near Atlanta, GA or north of Atlanta that knows how to value these vehicles?

Any advice on this would be very helpful. Thanks, I love my Jeep.

Dang, sorry about your Jeep!

Since you were not at fault you can hold out, if the other person's insurance wants to total you Jeep you can.

Send them a list of all the mods (which you have already done)

Start gathering up all the for sale listings that are compatible to your Jeep and send them to the adjuster.

Let them know you want them to either repair or replace your jeep with a compatible one.

Astute observation. We oftentimes forget the human element in things. All agents know what guidelines their company wants them to work within, but that leaves a lot of leeway. It can be interpreted very differently by an agent who is generally a "glass is half full" type, versus one who is a "glass is half empty" type.

The human element plays a huge role in how things will play out for someone making a claim. That's why it always is a good idea to be polite, even while standing your ground and demanding to be made whole.

Allstate is the insure of the at fault driver in my rollover last month… I was taken by ambulance to the hospital which was 100 yards from the accident site (ambulance bill is $1360) and was there for four hours and my hospital bill, including all tests and radiology services, is $34,600… 4 hours!… Any other time they would’ve had a bill at my doorstep in two weeks, wanting their money but it’s been too months and the adjuster still hasn’t got the bill from the hospital… I had a dash cam video, which showed obvious fault, of the accident and so far they have been cordial with me… it’s going to interesting to see how they react when the bills start rolling in
