I pulled a 2004 durango 4.7L alternator based on the research that has been posted, and tried to use it for my 98 TJ. Turns out, the mounting is completely different. Even if I could mount it, which I can't, the pulley doesn't line up right with the belt.
Similarly, the connector is completely different - on the TJ, there's 2 small 7mm nuts holding on a regulator or something similar, and 2 ground straps - on the durango alternator, it's just a connector with 2 pins (no ground straps). Even if I did get the right alternator, should I have just snipped the old connector off and attached the wires to the new connector? Nothing in any of the write-ups stated that.
Was the 97/98 wrangler a different beast somehow from the 99 and above? It doesn't look like it should be, as I didn't think the bracket changed (the A/C mounting area).
Any input appreciated. It was only $20 at the u-pull-it yard, so not a huge loss, just annoying that everything I read said that this is the engine to get it from, only to have it not work right.
