Rear end moving around in sharp turns

I rebuilt the rear lsd and installed a spartan lunchbox locker in front. Used to be open when I got it. I didn’t like the 3.07 gearing so I found some axles with 3.73h that had damaged track bar mounts and took the carriers out and installed on mine. Took me a few weeks of shimming and swearing cuz my first time doing gears but no problems yet. Haven’t been able to wheel it yet. Just wanna make sure everything good before I get stranded ! Lol
Next is winch bumpers and side armor. Not a rockcrawler but most other stuff. Will get pics tonight. I may have one on my phone .

I had a similar problem along with severe wear on my rear tires. It took me about 2 years to figure out the tube the passenger tire axle runs in was loose where it is pressed into the differential housing. I had little to no oil leaking. I have yet to hear of anyone else who had the same problem, but worth at least checking. Its not going to be obvious by just looking, you will have to jack it up and do some pushing and pulling.

I will check that the axleshaft isn’t loose like your saying

Did you replace the bushings? It sounds like the bushings are worn. The TJs are getting up in years, and many people neglect the bushings when installing new components.

I replaced the rear links and sway bushings today and the track bar I just put in a few weeks ago. I noticed it feels the same as when I bought it. Everything is torqued correctly.

The new stock control arms are 55 for upper and 120 ft lb lower.

Is your rear sway bar intact? Some people will remove them, and it may have been passed to you without one.

The rear axleshafts have play in them when I jack up the rear . Right side more than left. I just rebuilt the rear end so I’m not sure what happened. No strange noise that I’ve noticed. Does every Dana 35 have rear axleshaft play ?

Can't say for the Dana 35, but my Dana 44 has a small amount of play. It's a very small amount, just enough to make a clunk noise if you move the wheel in and out. Pretty sure that's normal.

In/out play is normal with the Dana 35, but it should only be about 1/8 inch. My Jeep felt the same as yours and it also clunked, which was the axle play. A shop measured the play at 1/3” on the right and about 5/8” on the left! The axle shaft ends had just worn down over time. It’s a ‘97, so they’ve been in there 20 years. I replaced them with Alloy USA 4340 cromo shafts and the Jeep drives so much better. No more play in turns, and no more clunking. Now I just keep the original shafts as trail spares. I would have liked to have gotten a Revolution Super 35 kit, but cost and time were a factor. I had a Jeep trip in just a few days and needed it fixed. Anyway, it may be worth replacing the shafts, or at least having the shafts checked for excessive play. Good luck.

This is a very good suggestion, and something that most of us probably overlook. Worn axle shafts ends could cause this for sure, especially if they are the originals.

hey so i had a very similar sounding problem, look at the bar pin on top of the rear shocks. My shock had slid off of the bushing on the center of the bar pin and clunked every time the weight shifted more than just changing lanes. I discovered it as i was replacing all the control arms and the track bar which i thought to be the problem.

My issue was with the axle housing, not the shafts. The housing would flex where the tube enters the differential housing. When I would go around a curve (especially if it had bumps) the Jeep felt like the rear end was shifting.

Wow are the shocks old?

they were maybe used for 500 miles of which about 90 were on old mining roads, i bought new ones of better quality when i rebuilt my rear suspension and replaced everything else. problem is fixed at least for now.

So if I weld the tubes to housing I wonder if this will correct? It’s really bad feels like rear steering . I wonder if the lunchbox locker in front is causing this ?
