Rear mounted tow hook?

Anyone run one of these on the rear of the frame? Opinions? Price is steep compared to a normal tow hook, didn't know if it's worth the added cost. What about mounting hardware, does not look that beefy...

Looks shiny! Personally, I'd just use a cheaper Curt tow hook or the like. You have to drill another hole in the frame, but they tie in nicely. I like the one's that have the cable clip that keeps your cable or tow strap from sliding off inadvertently.

I have a front tow hook off my wifes old grand cherokee (WJ),I plan to install that someday.

The one you posted looks to flashy. I would head to a pull and pay and go that route.

Yeah, definitely not a fan of the chrome or the price, the way this one is cast it looks like it would retain a tow strap better than a normal hook like Curt.

I have a Mopar tow hook on the other frame rail so this would be a second option for recovery depending on the angle beeded.

What I'm hearing is save the bling and the $40 dollar price tag and buy a $10 universal front hook and bolt it to the frame.

Definitely WAY WAY WAY overpriced, you just need a standard tow hook mounted to the frame like this. Just one hole through the outside of the frame is needed, the second hole is already there. Fish the required washers & nuts up inside the frame through the factory slot cut into the bottom of the frame at that location, use Grade 8 hardware to mount it.

Now that I have frame tie-ins to strengthen my bumpers connection to the frame, I prefer this....

Do you believe all bumper receiver hitches are going to be able to provide enough strength to actually allow that shackle hitch receiver to achieve its full 11,000 lb. rating? I don't. Most receiver hitches made for TJs are rated for no more than 3500 lbs. or so.

Also, despite how much time my TJ spends getting banged up by the rocks, with its rear tow hook installed like in my above photo, it is so far absolutely unscathed by the rocks.

No, I agree. If someone prefers a receiver hitch shackle, they need to make sure their receiver hitch is strong enough (not sure how one would do that!). The receiver hitch needs to be through-welded for sure. I use a Warn Rack Crawler bumper.

A question, with frame tie-ins, which I use to strengthen my bumper so I can tow a trailer, what is the best recovery method? I don't have welded shackle locations on the bumper and I don't think I can get a tow hook on the same location with the frame tie-in's. Looking for a good suggestion/solution.

Neither will interfere with the other. At least neither of the frame tie-ins I have installed would interfere with the style of tow hook in the above photo

Thanks, I'll take a look today. I might need some longer bolts, but that's an easy fix. I did scrape my tow hooks though, maybe I need to tone it down offroad!

I'll take a look, I use these frame tie-in's from Poison Spyder. They have the extra braced area with a hole, making it easier to reach the body mount bolt. It could be a close fit!

How could anyone try to sell tow hooks that put two mounting bolts in the opposite direction of the actual hook?

Here are the "similar items" listed on the Rugged Ridge link posted. Apparently they are in the order of most expensive and least likely to work listed first with the cheapest and most likely to work listed last.

Oops, I left out what I planned on posting for Jerry and his hook. I wouldn't have thought about mounting it on the side of the frame but that's a great idea used on a great hook.

Yep, and I did check, and the hook will work with the Poison Spyder frame tie-in brace, so I'm going back to this setup, just need two longer grade 8 bolts, not frame through, just long enough to accommodate the additional depth of the tow hook. Thanks for reigning me back into the family....

Well that was easy. As Jerry said you can use one of the stock frame holes and drill the second one right above a bottom frame access hole.

A 4.75 ton rated shackle in a 1.75 ton rated receiver hitch.

Just ordered a hook for 12 bucks including bolts, and I will mount as Jerry suggests. Great idea to mount to rear frame for the most strength, just drill one hole, sounds like a plan! Thanks Jerry!
