You may not be accounting for the install labor cost of replacing the clutch kit...
I'll put up a shop estimate this evening after work.

He absolutely did not include the labor cost. To R&R and rebuild a Tracloc I'd guess 3+ hours if you know what you're doing. You may not be accounting for the install labor cost of replacing the clutch kit...
90 mins, tops. A shop may charge 3 hrs labor but there is no way it actually takes that long.He absolutely did not include the labor cost. To R&R and rebuild a Tracloc I'd guess 3+ hours if you know what you're doing.
Yep, shop rate would be at or very close to 3 hours.90 mins, tops. A shop may charge 3 hrs labor but there is no way it actually takes that long.
My Dana 44 came with Trac Loc and as someone pointed out its probably shot after 81k miles. I'm trying for now to keep this Jeep simple, frugal and effective. It already came with a Dana 44, a blutooth stereo and an aftermarket amp. I'm cutting down the bumper and adding a winch plate, and I'm part sourcing a 2" lift so I don't have to pay $1000 for a kit with shocks I don't want. So the question is, rebuild, replace, or simply buy something like a true locker?
There's no gear setup required to replace a TracLoc with a Truetrac. The carrier would just need to be shimmed l/r to set its backlash but that's no big deal. Even that's not always required.Plus the extra labor for having to reset the gears with the trutrac.

Take off slowly on pavement while making a hard turn. If they be chirping, they be a working.
Hi Bob, I have an 02 TJ with the Dana 44 and trac lok, I'm looking to regear to 4.56. Can I pick your brain?
Not much brain to pick on anymore, but I'll help if I can.
LOL, yeah, I'm in the same boat with a lack of grey matter.l have the stock Dana 44 with 3.73 gears and trac lok. I want to regear to 4.56. Do you know if I need the thick ring gear? Do I need a new carrier? Getting mixed info from the parts dealers.
Yes, you would need a thick cut ring gear if you stay with the traclok. Do yourself a favor and dump it for a Detroit true trac. I first tried refreshing the traclok with new clutches. It was a PITA, and didn't last long. Ended up replacing the whole setup with a truetrac and chromo shafts.
