Your dash frame probably looks like this?

A guess...but I think they removed/modified it in later models because the "7-speaker" stereo became available that has the oem Infinity box enclosure in the dash.

Aha, good guess. I will go open up my dash soon. But yes that looks about right.

Right, but I like how the pods double as mounting plates. The 5.25s don't mount into the dash without a mounting plate, right?

Correct, 5.25" speakers need adapter plates.

I know that our '03 does not have this part of the dash frame/bracket.

Alright, sounds like @WestCoastDan was right (see here). So now I'll go back to Plan A of buying these 3D printed ones from @Vtx531 .
