I took my 05 wrangler TJ to a shop for a new track bar, but they said there was a rattling in the transfer case, so they removed my front driveshaft, and said I’d be fine to drive in 2WD. I now hear a continuous chain slapping noise, and a have hard shifts with a loud clunk or pop noise (sounds like if you drove over a soda can). It sounds like it’s coming from the transfer case (front middle underneath the jeep). They said the transfer case should be disengaged without the front driveshaft, so now I’m confused as to what the noise is and if I need to rebuild the transfer case or if maybe the noise is normal without a front driveshaft. It’s my daily driver, never off-roads. Any thoughts?

There shouldn't be any noise.

The front driveshaft always spins even when in 2H, as it's driven by the front wheels, so that's why they removed the front DS. That way the front DS isn't spinning the chain.

It sounds like the tcase may not be fully in 2H, possibly a shifter adjustment is needed.

Your tcase may need a new chain as well, but I'd sort out the shifter first.

Often as not 231Js can be found cheap (assuming you don't have a Rubicon)... couple hundred bucks.

Check FB and Craigslist.

Ridiculously easy to swap. And with your front shaft out you're a quarter of the way there.
