I took of my front bumper and front sway bar for the first time. I had been noticing signs of rust along the edges where the bumper mates atop the frame.
I expected the worst, fortunately the rust was very minor, a couple tiny spots here and there were starting to go to the ne t level, and the paint layer on the frame was pretty thin. Most of the shit seaping out of the crevasses was this nasty hellacious red clay that has driven me insane this last 6 months (I cannot get rid of this crap to save my life... it resides everywhere).
I cleaned up each spot pretty well and decided to hit it with some truck bed paint. I then took a thin layer of RCV grease and coated over the paint when it dried.
The bolts were pretty dirty and has some rust under the heads, so I swapped them out with new zinc coated bolts and washers. I cleaned the hell out of the tapped holes with PB Blaster and a nylon brush, which was enough to eliminate any crap that was in there. I also used silver Loctite anti-seize, I don't see this posing any issues with torque and it seems to keep rust at bay.
This was my first time following this process. On other vehicles, I would do a multi-day primer + paint job, but I don't have the time nor garage to do this right now. I'll spot check the area in a few weeks, but I'm wondering what you guys are doing to mitigate rust in areas like this?
