Sand collection: Am I missing a rubber cap here?

Guys,

While changing my fenders I found this cavity, above front bump stop and spring, filled and packed with sand, must have been a pound!

Am I missing a rubber cap here?

There isn't a cap. There are drain holes at the bottom, but crap still collects in there. I've seen enough rotted out upper mounts that I try to blast them clean with a pressure washer a few times a year.

Well that is the question I've been meaning to ask for a few months, along with the answer. You guys are great but it leads me to ask how do I find the drain holes? Mine weren't full of sand but they did fill up with water when I was hosing everything off a couple days before spraying Fluid Film just about everywhere except in those because of the water at the time.

I put a 1-1/2 inch chair leg rubber cap from ace hardware in mine. I had the same problem.

I can post a pic when I get home.

There's 2 small holes (too small) at base 180 deg apart

Yep, just jammed the open in in there and pushed/pounded with my fist a bit. They haven’t budget after about 1,200 miles (if I had to guess).

You can drill the drains slightly larger but you're still going to get larger rocks in there. Vacuum them out every now and again. Plugs can have the side effect of keeping moisture in so take a look under them to make sure it's staying dry.

Also, the rears on mines had a good bit of sand in the small hole above the spring. I blew it out and found a rubber grommet plug that fit pretty well and put in there too. Maybe some smaller rubber stoppers would work well too. I’ll have to find some next time I’m at the hardware store.
